does anyone here use higromite or a brand of diatomite rock ( such as dyna rok)?

if not tell me what reusable medium your using, and what you like and dislike about it. Most importantly how easy it is to reuse

please nothing on hydroton, ive read much on it already.

you broke my only rule, at least you can coment on how you clean it, how you feel about it, how many times you flood or drip.

I'm only in my first round about with hydroton...I just cleaned them with water to remove dirty prior to using it........I flood 3x a day.......I LOVE HYDROTON. My 3x2ft table floods in 7 minutes and drains in about 20 seconds, no joke. HYDROTON RULEZ.

thats great.

well the advantage i see to using the rocks that ive mentioned are that they retain water, slowly releasing it over time to the roots.

hydroton retains almost nothing, so in theory the other rocks are like it but better.

I would love to read what someone who uses them has to say

Ahh I see....but to the contrary my friend. I do believe that hydroton DOES hold water. And I believe I have evidence to back that up. I filled my first res up with 10 gallons of water. After ONE DAY, I must have had maybe 3 or 4 gallons left in the tank. I'm pretty sure the plants didn't drink 7 gallons in a day (I have 4 plants only). It's possible that a little bit of water was absorbed into the rockwool cubes (I think the water level goes maybe a 1/2 inch up the bottom if that, probably less).

they dont absorb water, im sure some will stay in their nooks and cranies. but it doesnt do a sponge action type of thing, like the other ones
