Rockwool or Soil?

I went to the local head shop and bought some Grodan germination rockwool cubes, a propagation tray, and intended on getting some Fox Farm Ocean Forest. The guy at the shop suggested to start out in Happy Frog and then move to Fox Farm.

My question is this: Should I start in rockwool and move to happy frog and then to ocean forest?

Or shoul I just skip the rockwool and go straight to soil?

it really depends on your level of comfort with propagating seeds and or clones. I personally wouldn't use Rockwool cubes (as they are generaly used for Hydro setups) with soil but that's yer call it should work either way

Yeah, I never heard of anyone sticking rockwool in soil? I guess it would work. But like Fallen Buckshot mentioned its mostly used for hydro. They got peat pucks that expand when you add water which work good with soil. bongsmilie

one question i always had when it comes to rockwool it looks like its almost a spunge and holds alot of water. if this is true. then wouldnt that feeder tube the hydro guys run to there plants drown the roots? its a constant stream from the water pump right to the net basket with the rockwool cube inside it

Most people use timers to control nute feed. I'm using a drip system right now with rockwool and hydroton and my pumps only run three times a day for about 20-30 minutes and all my plants are fine. True Aero (5-50 micron misters, nubulizers for fog etc) and NFT is very different. This needs a constant supply of nutes. But I've heard of people doing 8 minutes on 3-5 off. But these people are using aerocloners so no rockwool. That's what I'm looking forward to playing with. bongsmilie

i think he may just wanted u to buy the happy frog. I started with FFOF and ended with it no problems.

well some side by sides have sayed that you get more explosive root growth with rockwool so you would realy have to do a trial for yourself .. never hurts to learn by experience

Rockwool to soil isn't a prob. Done often for/with clones.

Happy Frog then Ocean Forest, sound good. not sure if needed though. HF is lighter in its nutes then OF. (add perlite either with either soil.)
