Root aphid?

yeah, changing pots is not gonna do much. Are you dealing with these in flower? I did rootball dunks with pyganic to knock the population back and then ultimately imidaclprid was what got rid of them for good. I was dealing with them in veg though, in flower you might try bioceres WP to keep them under control until harvest.

Coincidentally, every time I have tried to run coco, I've ended up with root aphids....not sure if they are somehow attracted to the substrate where i live, but when i go back to peat based mixes I dont have any problems.
Really? Even with fresh coco every time? Never heard of imidaclprid before.

Yes fresh coco, maybe it was just coincidence but I'm growing outdoor all year and havent seen them since switching back to peat based mixes.
Imidacloprid is the active ingredient in some flea medications for pets.
Oh it's an outdoor grow. I thought it was inside. Do they have it for plants too or did you get some that was made for pets? This is good to know, so thanks in advance.

I'm in veg until I win this war. I'm using FFOF. I've used soap insecticide and neem oil in a mister and spinosad and BTI so far on the roots.
Numbers are way down above ground but who knows what's going on down under

Just to get some pics out there. This looked like several kind of nute deficiencies as it got worse. FE, K, CA looking symptoms. Early blistering and very obvious bite marks under magnification. Shiny and disfigured leaves with burnt tips and edges were there throughout. I call them black plague.

So, I think I’m infected with these lil fuckers too :-(. Gardenin’ indoors since 2003 and this is the first time I’ve had to deal with them. I took some cuts from my 1 of my 2 mothers last week, and went to check on why they were rotting/drooping, and found the stems covered with little white aphids, at the soil line. Ive switched methods recently, rooting in soil now, instead of plugs (better success) and used some re-amended soil for the cuts. I’ve had the green variety that live above the soil, I’ve had spider mites, thrips, and fungus gnats but these are new, and from the threads I’ve read, I’m terrified and hate them already.

I run a small personal grow for me and my wife (stage 4 cancer patient) so this is kind of important to deal with and get it done. Shes on chemo, and I keep her meds supplied. Luckily, since it’s just us, it’s only a couple of small tents, and I only have 2 mom plants. I had just finished a flower run that should keep us supplied for the year. I have a bunch of pepper seedlings and some new cannabis seeds started, but everything looks healthy so far. They are in “fresh” soil, the same batch that was mixed for my previous run, but extra/unused. I also have a couple 15 gallon smart pots with old root balls and soil, and a 45 gallon tub of the old soil/root balls, from the last run, that I just re-amended (possibly the source of this issue).

I took some advice from the Organic forums, regarding making fungal tea from outside compost, and made tea from my outdoor pile. I didn’t feel comfortable possibly introducing pests from outside into my clean grow (worm castings, dry supplements, recycled soil), but many had said “go for it”, so I went against my instincts and did it. I think this is where the issue came from.

Whats the best “not fucking around” way to get rid of this problem ? Is it worth trying to save any soil? Can I put it all in a tent, crank up a small space heater and “cook” everything to death? Should I just throw away all the soil, boil all my smart pots and tools, spray everything down with bleach/water including tents, take emergency cuts, dip them in something, and put them into root plugs that have been boiled, or dirt that has been baked in the oven ? I don’t wanna lose these 2 mom plants. They are my only keepers, but I need to make sure I get this handled effectively, because my garden is more than just a hobby for us. Thanks.

post pics of the issue, what you describe doesnt fully sound like root aphids.

I threw the cuts out into the compost right after seeing the bugs. In the previous grow, I had some fungus gnats, and also saw an occasional extra chunky one flying around that I suspected might have been a ”root aphid flyer”. I had nematodes and springtails in the soil too, but these were different. I got through harvest and uprooted and looked through a couple of the root balls and didn’t see any bugs like I saw today - just springtails. Life got busy, but Its been nagging in the back of my mind for the last 2 months.

Regarding these critters today, I looked at them through my scope, and they were soft bodied, round, slow moving, translucent white with a green patch on the back of the bigger ones, had a head and abdomen, but I couldn’t tell if they were 6 legged with long antennae, or 8 legged. Ive seen springtails and nematodes, and they definitely were not those. I’ve had aphids in the past, but these were smaller, and not green, but acted like them. I didn’t not see any on the soil or above the soil, just on the stem. From what I’ve read, beneficial mites are supposed to move faster, and are more independent. These things barely moved, and clustered on the stem, at and below the soil. I have no aphids on my sticky traps, and have not had any of them inside in a few years. I took a quick scoop and look through my soil bins, but did not see any critters. I don’t have one of those magnifiers than connects to my phone. I can do a more thorough check again tomorrow, or after the kids go to bed.

EDIT : google image has shown me several different bugs that claim to be root aphids. I’m 50/50 that these are either one of those types of “root aphids” in one of the pics, or soil mites eating the rotting stems, because my recycled soil mix could have been too hot and heavy for clones, killing them. These bugs were translucent, but all the root aphid pics were opaque critters. One site said they are brown, while a few others said they can be brown, white, or green ? One site said pear shaped, another said segmented bodies and round?

From what I've been reading online, it seems like this is the only option for most.
These shits came from out of nowhere too. I'm really at a loss of words if this is the only option. I just started back up just to shut it back down.
I'm nuking em I'm not shutting nothing down lol..I used bunch of stuff

Imidacloprid ended it for me. It's a systemic insecticide of synthetic nicotine. I haven't seen shit since dunking with this. It's approved for fruits and vegetables, but not for weed in a bunch of states. I tried many things that helped, but didn't didn't finish my root aphids. They are prolific and very fuking resilient. I was able to revive all but a couple of plants and then took clones from the good strains to start over. DE top dressing and Neem oil did a good job of clearing the foliage but the root damage was extensive. The dead plants had almost no root ball.
I'm undecided about keeping anything from the original crop. They look great now and I kept them in veg an extra month but I lean organic and that was one badass pesticide.

I am trying to figure out the doseage of 21 % for root dunk. Instructions says .5 Ml per gallon. This may be on the low side?

I would dunk with 15 to 20ml/gal. That's just me but it works 100% of the time. If you're in flower already, I would try half or less that amount and be prepared to monitor and repeat if necessary. I would top with DE until you know it worked. It reduces everything and keeps them from flying to every plant if they haven't already.
Is this the prime source 2F select T/I 21% liquid?

Beautiful pictures, what did you take those pictures with? Thanks
