Typically a winterized concentrate dissolved in one or some combination of PG/PEG/VG. The most common concentrates used are BHO, SCFE CO2, and QWET/QWISO, any one of which will work.

Locally "Clear" fractionally distilled concentrates are being used for the purpose, to take advantage of lower quality concentrates.

I'm also lost on the whole topic and just would like to read about something straight to the point and different ways and solvents which could be used. What has been your experience?

You can use any really, mixed with PG. That is the simple answer. There are many threads about make e-juice. Look for the EJ Mix thread...
