If you are a DTE customer you can save money by running your lights btwn the hrs. of 7pm to 11am. between these hours they are getting the lowest demand, which means they are selling for cheaper.

Yes, but your rates are doubled during peak hours when you opt for this. It would be great for a single guy that's at work all day

I've checked in to this with DTE. Unless the lady I spoke with is mistaken, you need a smart meter with a timer installed which can monitor peak/off-peak usage. The rates are 50% lower during off peak hours, and 50% higher during peak hours.
 
Tried it. Hated it.
I couldn't adjust to 3rd shift.
Many people prefer it though.
Like stow pointed out, the double price during the day really gouges the savings.

Solar panels are cheaper than ever, just in case someone hasn't shopped them in a while. No moving parts. 50 year lifespan. 30% tax credit
 
Everyone should keep their eye on this company http://www.solarcity.com/ for when they come
to MI. They come and install everything and take care of the maintenance. You buy your power
from them for better rates then the power companies in some states. Elon Musk is the chairman
and it's ran by his cousins. The stock price went from like 13$ to 60 something this year. Their
business model is pretty interesting. I could see how this company getting really big it 30 years
or so.
 
I'm setting up an array of panels. There are plenty of contractors around that can install these. Actually anyone can install them. Literally Plug & Play. You'll need an electrician to make the final connection to the house, though. And send an application to Consumers Energy for Net Metering
