GE brightsticks already outdo CFLs both in efficiency and pretty much equal in cost.
Especially when you have a lucky sale.

Remove the "bulb" it's a great 10 watt light with the little SMDs shining directly downwards.
3-pack (3x10W) is 10 dollar homedepot.
