I just sat with another two drams of the HP12 tonight, and it really grew on me. The smoke really isn’t too bad. The taste reminds me of drinking mulled caramel apple wine by a nice crackling hearth in the winter. What were initially a too-sudden peaty smoke was just my tongue “dipping its toes in.” After adjusting, it really is very smoothe, and the smoke and slight brine of Orkney seaspray that the middle faded into are more or less just subtle details in the background. I really like this one a lot. So did my mother-in-law (to be. Maybe. I dunno.) No medicinal or iodine taste, it should be noted.

@Singlemalt - I promised you a whisky review way back when.
I drank a bottle of this, and it was vexingly hard for me to pin down.



The painted bottle is a nice color, but there's no way to see the liquid level. The empty was also massive, which had as a consequence ~invert~ ~drip~ what, already??
The flavors are difficult for me to describe. They kept changing. I don't blame the whisky- I blame my taste and smell perversion.



There is a bright malt on the nose and palate, but it is somehow coarser than, say a Glenlivet Nadurra. There's a faint "cotton candy/scooter pie" note that I find a little out of place, what with I'm spoiled by Glenlivet products.
There is nice balanced wood in the mouth (!), but it is not as smooth as the wood in a Glenlivet 15.

The thing I found weirdest is that smoky/burnt flavors seemed to come and go.
Once I tasted a peat-smoke sort of taste.
The other time there was a bitter black char flavor, especially on the finish. But when I tasted for these outlier sensations again, I could not honestly discern them.

Overall a good whisky but there's better to be had at the same price.

Lately my "basic drinker" has been this. Delicious and cheaper/better than Glenlivet 12.

Thanks. How has your health been recently? I ask because I've had a bout of flu and now looks like a minor pneumonia; as such my taste is totally out of whack from foods to drinks and doesn't stay consistent from one day to another. Your transient smokey flavors reminded of this.

I've been curious but haven't pulled the trigger on Suntory, given the Japanese ethic of perfection I have no biases, just haven't gotten around to it. Thank you and I shall try it

My health has been too good for me to have a flu to blame. I remember getting taste shifts with a flu ... this is probably age.

I wait 'til Safeway puts the Toki on sale at $30 or just under.

Had a bottle of Akashi the other day (the blended one). You can probably find better whiskeys in that price category, but I was quite happy with that. The one I really enjoy though is Talisker... Don't know if this is mentioned in previous posts, but if you drink Old Fashioned cocktail, what is your favorite whiskey to use for this drink?
