Screws for cob holders.

Hey yall.

There's been a lot or chit chatting in different theads on which screws to use on cob holders.I think the majority of people use chip lok ideal holders.
So if you've built a diy, could any of you chime in on how you drill and tapped? Or if you just drill a hole and screw in a screw, explain what size bits you used?
One thing I'd like to know is if possible, posting some links on where to buy the correct screws you used, would be very helpful. Also taps and dies where you sourced what you used
I basically think there's probably more than Just myself, Curious On everyones Techniques.

I believe they use 3mm screws, I used 4-40 or some equivalent. I am not sure where you live so I cant post links to hardware stores in your area. Try mcmaster.com if you want tools and hardware from one place. I know this topic has been covered.

There were several excellent threads if I remember correctly. I used 4-40, drilled and tapped. Don't forget the oil and go slow!

Also your tap depends on whether you are making blind holes [holes with bottoms] or thru hole, each type requiring a separate bit....

Spiral flute for blinds
spiral tip fluteless for thru-hole

Tapping is completely unnecessary. Finished an 8 COB/lens installation (48 screws with lens holders) on HeatsinkUSA aluminum and just drilled through with a 3/32 bit and screwed in rolling thread hex head screws. Never broke a screw and never had an issue. Occasionally a screw will get hard to make the last couple of turns and you just have to back it out a couple a turns and then finish the drive.

Take a screw with you to the hardware store and get a matching manual hex head driver. Don't use your drill, it's very easy to drive the screws by hand.

Get 2-3 drill bits, sharp is better. On the lens holders, use your center punch in the outer third of the hole in the holder so you have room for the hex driver. Of course if you get Philips head rolling thread screws or don't use the glass lenses the point is moot.

I think I'd rather use Phillips pan head. Basically just need M3 steel screws right @alesh ?
you can use whatever you like, pan head qualifies. Just read the data sheet. 90% of your questions could have been answered thru reading. For 90% of what we are working with....it calls for M3 with 4/5 pitch and 5-6mm length, min.

Anyone giving you the correct opinion, hopefully READ the datasheet for that particulare cob/ whatever else setup....Very Important!

or just get a heatsink already pre-drilled :) for Vero 29-Cree3070/3590 and Book 3 holder compatible....:peace:

I plan on 3590 100mm glads lenses. Why won't Phillips work with them?
