Sealant for hydro project??

What sealants are considered safe for contact with hydro solution????

Want to do a vinyl fence post project, but want to be able to check the spray heads frequently, since I have had problems with them clogging. Want to use something like silicone on one end for inspection and maintenance, but worry about VOC's in the sealants.

If this is a non-issue, let me know.

Was just thinking, the amount of water that will be in the fencing will be insignificant. Will seal the drain end with vinyl fencing sealer, and maybe just duct tape the cap on the other end. Possibly use some kind of silicone, and just replace when needed. Possibly also putting screening around the pump inlet would keep crap out of the spray heads.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Building an aeroponic vinyl fence post rig tonight. Instead of running the water in through the cap, want to go through the top. Want to be able to disassemble for inspection and cleaning. Was going to use the painters tape on the pvc pipe going into the vinyl fence, where the feed goes into the fence, to tighten seal. The tape would be replaced at least once a week, or when I notice the heads not spaying properly.

Will seal the drain end with the stuff that comes with thee caps. The other cap, on the inside, I am thinking of weather strips, around the contact area, and then just tape it shut. Not really worried about a few drops of water, as much as ruining my experiment, by introducing poisons.

My rule of thumb is to use sealants or adhesives that are for potable (drinking) water applications. If it is safe for that, it is safe for hydroponics.

That is what I have been looking for, but hard to find at home depot. Most are for sealing around counters and showers. For PVC there is cement, but want to disassemble for cleaning. Not sure if silicone products (which are abundant) are safe. Have read many packages that talk of dangers from the product, which probably goes away after curing.

The dual-syringe ones work, but you can buy larger portions at a steep quantity discount if you get the cans. cn

Talk to the Home Depot guy. Tell him you need to glue white PVC for use in your greenhouse. Like you said, once it cures, the danger has evaporated away.
 
Oh man; i might have made life too complicated. If you are doing fairly light duty, try silicone aquarium sealant. It outgasses acetic acid, which is pretty benign and is sometimes used to adjust hydro pH. cn

it needs 24 hours to cure but afterwards u are 100% safe
anything food grade is hydro safe ......just let it cure fully then u are good to go for anything

No need to pay extra for aquarium grade. Any 100% silicone is safe once completely dry, but if it's thick that can take days. 11 ounce caulk tubes are easiest to work with. Wear nitrile gloves to smooth it without covering your hands. PC11 is a two part epoxy that hardens and is more durable long term. Avoid cyanoacrylates; super glue

Anything specific i can get to just seal up the parts that are leaking without having to drain my whole system? It just leaks here n there n i need something that will seal it while its dripping
