Clones grow true to the mother plant you're cloning from. If you find a great Mom plant with dank growth, branching, disease & pest resistance, and overall healthy then it's best to clone from the Mom plant. Unless you 100% know your seed source & genetics it's a gamble on what sort of phenotypes you can end up with. Depending on the reliability of the breeder you can get a hit or miss. You also need to understand about F1 hybrids etc to ensure you are dealing with stable genetics. I personally am with your buddy. If you have access to a good Mom plant you can get a great crop going in no time. Seeds take longer to germinate & get into vegetative growth as well.

do you know how long i need to grow from seed to start the budding
It depends on the strain that you are working with. If you are budding a more Indica dominant than you can let it veg up to 18 inches before inducing flowering. If you are working with heavier sativas then you need to only veg those things until they are a foot or less. If you veg too long before inducing flowering & don't know what your strain is, you could end up being like that movie with Mickey & the Beanstalk where your plants are literally growing out of your house! A little more specifics of the clone or seeds you're working with will help us give you more specific information.

Also, TB is completely correct whereby you can start the plants on 12/12 from seed but generally you ONLY want to do this when you are cloning for sex. The reason why people don't generally do this with sprouted seeds is because it greatly diminishes your harvest by causing the plants to be leggy & not form fully dense buds that they should be trained to do. When you work with clones you are able to start the plants on 12/12 from the get go to figure out what sex your bigger plants are. An example would be if you had 10 plants in all & establish that up to 4 of them can be female (results can vary & you can take steps to ensure more females). Well if you take 3 good cuttings to clone from each of the 10 plants you could produce up to 30 more plants from the 10. Out of those 30 plants & a possible 40% female ratio, that's going to be 12 female plants in all. When you figure out which plants are male you discard those immediately. When your clones are going on the 12/12 & you establish females, you take more clones from the strongest of your Mom plants every 1 to 2 weeks to start a perpetual harvest right after you start the other females that aren't growing as well as your dominant female in your bunch. Your yield for your 1st crop in theory will be a drag, your 2nd crop may produce better results because it will be your seed crop, but once you get the veg & timing down for your cuttings then your future crops "could" produce better & better results the more you get dialed into it.

This may sound like a ton of random banter that doesn't make sense but it's 7:35am, I've been up on my feet for the past 7.5 hours, I'm dog ass tired & figured this may potentially answer some of your ?'s but I know it's going to cause you to ask more. :)
