Going through their catalog, thinking about buying seeds, any recommendations about some good seed company's? Vegetable seeds. How about these guys, Seed Savers Exchange? Just figure I have the lights to get started a little earlier, instead of buying plants from the local nursery, last 2 years been real shitty, the tomatoe plants been terrible. Live in the mid atlantic area. Like to start in March, indoors. it will be here, soon.

They offer good seeds of the non GMO type but be forewarned that much of the stock has no resistance when it comes down to disease and such .. None the less I love growing my vegetable garden with seed saver seeds and just might send some back one day ..

I think he was talking about that heirloom foods are more valuable to pests and such and to be very careful when growing them for that reason.

Yeah, SSE is great and trustworthy IMO. High Mowing Seeds and Seeds of Change are both quite good as well. One of the best books to go into a gardening season feeling incredibly inspired is Barbara Kingsolver's non-fiction: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. Amazing count of her families experience growing/sourcing all their own food from a 1/4 acre garden and local meat providers. It's filled with tons of good advice, food industry factoids and lots of seed vendor references in the back.

Same here. Have had great success with them the past few years and their selection is fantastic.

I also used Baker Creek recently for Bhut Jolkia seeds. Great germination rate
Good germ rate on rhe ghosts? I ask because i have some on this years order and would love them to grow lol. I was gifted some from a friend last year that he ordered on ebay. Not one popped. And ive never had a problem getting things to grow so i was very dissapointed haha.

I get my pepper seeds simply by keeping an eye open for the peppers I want then take the seeds out. I usually get them from indian shops. Just got a load (24) ghosts germinate this way. I find a heated propogator and a couple of cfls help a lot.

Yes, very good germination ratio. Out of 15, 9 germinated really well. I would have gotten a higher rate if I didn't allow the paper towels dry out (it was my first time and the heat was too high) and I had them in a glass cup with no plastic. If you do moist paper towel in ziplock baggie and germ @ 80 degrees they will be ready in about a week - they are known to take longer.

Their catalog has some nice articles too, especially about the GMOs (page 14)

Another great place is eonseed dot com. I've done a few transactions, small business but awesome support. The online catalog looks terrible, but have a nice selection if you know what you're looking for. I found it when trying to find everglade tomatoes! So far only 1 in 15 cracked, I'll give them 2 weeks and report back the ratio.

AMAZING book. What a gifted writer she is. I thought the best parts involved her children, how they adapted to homesteading while living otherwise like normal kids. Highly recommended.
