my father who hasn't smoked since the eighties recently gave me half a Tylenol bottle full of seeds from the seventies that have been sitting in a drawer for years. i tried soaking a dozen in paper towels for the last four days no sprouts yet. anybody have an idea how to germinate really old seeds successfully? it would be cool to be able to smoke some old strain my dad used to toke on

Put them under a red light for a bit and then try again, also score the shell a bit so water can soak inside. Also you might wanna stick them in a cup of tepid tap water for 24hrs so the shell can soften.

good luck!!

some of them i can tell are hollow and dead but there's a good amount that look normal i'll crush one up though and see if its dead inside thanks for the response and the link down bottom on starting seeds looks like i've been going about it all wrong never grew from seeds before

i managed to get some 12 yr old NLx Nigerian sativa $eeds to germinate they had been kept in my fridge for the duration
i didn't do anything other than test how firm they were the ones that survived me crushing them with my fingers were planted
they germinated as normal maybe a little slower 4-5 days but a few of them stopped straight after splitting and died the tap root was tiny looked dried out even though it was sitting in a wet rockwool cube
i ended up with 3 healthy plants but 2 turned out males LOL the female i ended up with was good but not worth all the hassle
hope you have better luck

peace

If you put them in a glass of water, after a while the decent seeds that don't float and fall to the bottom of the glass might sprout for you, soak them first for up to 12 hours and see what happens. You can store seeds for years but they need to be in an airtight container surrounded by rice to help keep out the moisture. Put them in the fridge.

Well here is a little fun fact (Although it may not apply to all seeds)

there was recently a ancient discovery of a extinct plant, were talking at least 30 thousand years old.
The seeds were sprouted (All of them) after being found and now they are growing and bringing back a extinct plant into the world (Looks like a weird palm tree)
So I dont think the seeds are useless best bet is to pop them, if anything maybe what doesn't kill them makes them stronger?

Good luck

All I can do when I read this post is go wayyyy back in time around 79ish when my dad had "sunshine in a bag" it was called! 4 fingers of golden goodness and I didn't even like cannabis back then I still could appreciate the sexiness it would show, the panama red I saw was sick shit too. If you got what you say you got, oh my op your father handed you a gift and a half. Ah man to get my hands on original lambsbread....................gives me goosebumps.

Hi Newbidoobiedoo,
I also have some mature seeds. About 5 years old and stored in fridge. I'm thinking I won't have a problem.

I'm an old timer and started smoking in 1968. There were strains identified by location and description. Mexican red hair, Panama red, Columbian Gold and so on. I smoked Panama red and actually grew out some Columbian but didn't save any seeds. (slaps hand to forehead)

Anyway, good luck and I hope you get some great plants. Expect sativas unless the seeds are post "Afghan Invasion".
Cheers,
JD
