i just moved north from the southern usa and this is my first time trying to get seeds to germinate in a non tropical climate....... ive had them in a paper towel for days now wet as can be but nothing....i think it is the temp obviously and lack of sun due to this cold shitty weather. if you live in a cold region can you tell me how you germ seeds in the winter??

hmm, how i germinate my seeds are, i use regular toilet paper and throw a couple of seeds in them wet them real nice, and put it in a Zip Bag, Seal it tight and see what happens in the next 3-5 days,
and how many seeds are you talking about?

well im going for 1 plant but i have 6 seeds germing. ill try the bag method. now i also have the issue of temp and unavailable sunlight. i have my 6 cfls in the closet can i germ them with those. my house has no windows downstairs, and i dont want to get any attention to my windows or house so i want to avoid it if possible

Thats exactly what I do but the zip bag is placed in a heated propagator in the dark and sits in temps of 30C.

ok because i think the reason they wont sprout is because the paper towl is freezing cold and wet when i touch it and i know that stunts growth, i just need to find a place that wont get that cold in the house. thanks

ok ill be sure to try that with a few seeds as well. anything to get these bastards germing. because once they germ im pretty savvy on the growing. although im gonna try cfls this time

Yeah, I think you need some heat. I use a plate with paper towels and set that on my lap top. Or you can put it on heating pad or electical device that is left on. The proper germ temp is around 75-90F. Maybe you need to scarify the seeds meaning put them in small match box with an emery board taped inside and shake 'em up? It breaks the surface so moisture can enter the seed. good luck!

Next time try a cup of water with a few crumbs of rooting powder and a splash of hydrogen peroxide. Leave them in that for 12 hours and then plant in prepared medium. I like to put a dome over mine, made out of the bottom of a clear plastic pop bottle. I leave the dome on until they've sprouted and are standing up nicely.

I keep them warm in my grow cabinet.

best of luck on your grow.

thanks ive got 6 cfls on em right now 2 1 quart pots all purpose potting mix, good plant food , nitrogen enriched coffee husks, they should grow well. im growing them under my bathroom sink. i cut up a shiny reflective white shower curtain, made myself a little 1.5 x1x 16in space hung the lights on chain. now i just have to figure out ventilation because i notice the temp rising already in the room after the lights have been on for just 20 minutes. i im thinking of cutting the back out of the wall and placing a small fan to get the air out

ok the best technique ive used so far for germinating any seeds is to put them in a wet paper towel/toilet paper, go buy a small plastic pot, take the block sponges used for growing in the starter pots and pack them down in the pot. pack them tight. you dont wanna see any open spots where air can easily escape. wet them generously. take your paper towel, with the seeds in it, and put them on top of the sponge. now take any brand of cling wrap( i use glad, its sticks better) and place over the top of the pot. now that your finished with the set up, just place it on a heating pad, and turn the heating pad to medium. and place a towel around the pot for better insulation. hope this helps. it usually germinates my seeds in less than a day.

i live in the pacific northwest, cold shitty weather all winter, i just put my seeds in a closed container with water, then throw the container in my heated fish tank, works everytime
