Me and my buddies have scored beans 3 different times of BigBud in the 90's. I'll try to answer your ?'s
1. You need to understand that bigbud has a million different phenos in a pack of seeds lol. I'm not sure if they have fixed that yet. So flowering time will vary. But roughly 56-60 days, is how long we flowered for.
2. As long as you realize it's not top shelf :-) It's definately not to bad in the potency dept. So many people talk shit about bigbud, but I bet they never even grew it.
3. Avg yields by US, for the phenos WE kept, were around 2lb's per 1k.

One important note about that strain: They even say it in the description. Branches are skinny, and lot's of support is needed. Sort of a pain in the ass!

also how many havests did you have? id like a strain to keep around as long as possible without loosing vigor. does it cross very well?

We grew it indoors mainly, hydro. Outdoors, very limited experience way back then. I grow some very heavy trees outdoor these days, and to be honest with you, Bigbud, will probably not ever be in any of our gardens. (Pot snobs here in Ca)

I've made some very interesting crosses back in the day with the BB. We grew it for about ten years. 1st time one of us accidentally killed the only momma we had after about a year. 2nd plant from seed lasted roughly 7-8 yrs, than picked up a disease or something, and turned into hay. The 3rd time from seed lasted a couple years before we decided to let it go, as that type bud didn't work in Ca anymore.

old school hawaiian indica. before sensi dis. it.she yeilds well but looking for a lil more outta her
Nice!
To make your own crosses, i think you can do better than Bigbud IMO. Hell Critical mass is a revamped Bigbud, and I've tried a few crosses of it, and i haven't been impressed so far. Look at me, another person dissing bigbud lol.
I mentioned a couple strains in a different thread that were my new commercial strains in around 2003/2004? One of them is Nirvanas Ice. Holy smokes dude! Super frosty, super heavy big colas, easy to trim. Relatively short flowering time to boot. Out of one pack of seeds, the fem's were pretty similar.
I've wanted to do what your gonna be attempting for some time now, and that is the strain that comes to mind.
Check out the old school genetics in it. Pretty solid.

Well...these days it's all about the og's.
Would love to try and increase the yield on some of them like fire og. Even though I already have a very heavy cross of it in the very special WiFi I have. Would love to see what would happen chucking some pollen onto sfv og also. I have 't been growing the purps for a couple years now, but that is what I originally wanted to cross the ice with.

i like the old school gens and by the looks of the ice pedigree it hits my mark espeacially if it yeilds as you say

what kinda yeild and ptency did you get outta the ice. sounds like a all around solid strain
A little better than bigbud in both departments. Plus, way easier to grow(sturdier), and a breeeeze to trim. A VERY fuely smell, not diesel, but fuely. If it smelt of diesel, it would still be in my garden. Hey, if you do make a cross with ice, let me know how it turns out k.
Btw....the buds look waaaaay better in real life then nirvanas picture.

My understanding is about 1/4 plants have that massive yielding trait and about 1/4 are pretty good quality. That gives you around a 1/16 chance to find a good yielding plant of decent smoke.

At least this is the way it is for Critical Mass from Shantibaba. I'd go with his line before Sensi's as there have been some really good plants found. The potency is right there.

If anyones looking at big bud, you would be better off with serious double dutch. The only thing dd gives up is a slight bit of flavour to the "elites" but it has the potentcy and super heavy yeilds of nice looking round buds. Not many big yeilding strains can lay claim to both breeder and grower cups on icmag but double dutch has.
Its actually one strain ill always have beans for and will always recommend
