side thought??? did you just buy a new router??... because older wireless cards use different "radiowaves"<<< (not really radio waves but best way to think of them.) then the newer routers transmit . considering your running xp i assume the computer is at least 5 years old.

So I just reinstalled Windows XP on my PC and it doesn't have an active internet connection. I can't figure out how to set it up. The router and modem are hooked up to the main computer in the office and this one is in my room. We use Comcast High Speed.

I really need some help here. If anyone can it would be a huge relief
I'm sure you got it by now, but go to your "internet connection hardware"'s driver software download page and install it. then that PC will have internet again. But XP sucks ass with viruses so makesure you get an antivirus like Avira Free antivirus

Click on Start then right click on My Computer.
Click on the Hardware tab of the System Properties page
Device Manager
Network adapters and post back what you have please.
Also while you are there you can highlight your Network card, then right click over it and choose Update Driver. Often Windows Update has the driver you need.

Next while you are there at the System Properties dialog box click on the Automatic Update tab and make sure you have them turned on (that will be useful AFTER you get connected..
Ok now close the window.

Now click on Start > Run type in cmd and press enter
Type in: ipconfig /all press enter
Now copy (right click on the window and choose select all, hitting enter after that copys it to your clipboard),
Now PRIVATE MESSAGE me the results don't post them because your mac address is specific to you. Or delete your mac address it's not necessary.

I don't have anything that says meteors adapter? And my cmd prompt won't let ipconfig open. The black cmd opens then closes immediately and when I open cmd then try running it, the C:\ line comes up again....

I really want to fix this by myself but its not looking good.

So you ran a line from the modem to this computer as well? Or do you have a router? Because you need a router if you are going to hook up another computer, or you could unhook the other computer long enough to do what you need to with the internet

but if you want internet on both computers at the same time you need a router...so you are using the main computer now...yes?

My husband installs cable internet and television for a living, so we got this as long as you can actively troubleshoot...I have you a technician...

I guess I should give some more history for yall.

It's my old computer, it just got swamped out with viruses so I decided to do a reinstall of Windows. Ive had it hooked up to the internet before. It's nothing on the router/ modem/ cable end. It's just the software/ drivers that help those operate (In sure yall know what drivers are).

I built this computer myself. Or I should say, slowly rebuilt it myself as old parts went out. So I'm fairly computer savy, and which also explains why I wanted to do this myself. I've reinstalled Windows before but I must have done something different. It wasn't nearly as hard.

I'm thinking my best bet would be to get a full list of the drivers I'll need (if someone wants to help *hint hint*), and reinstall yet again.

No you're fine. Just slow down it will get sorted. It's closing because you are typing ipconfig /all in the run box and not the cmd.exe window.

Ok let's do this slower.
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Now a command line interface will open.
You should see a white cursor blinking. Now type in:
ipconfig /all
Press enter

Copy and paste me the info and delete the Mac address.

And I gotta ask. If I should PM you this info, what makes you from not hacking my sht? I'm really not trying to be a dick, I'm so happy I'm getting help, but I'm just curious.

*And again, I typed it in cmd prompt and it says

"c:\documents and settings\(my user name)>
Windows IP Configuration
c:\documents and settings\(my user name)> "

That is a reasonable question suffice to say the mac address uniquely ID's your NIC card. So it wasn't me hacking you it was more you not giving out uniquely identifying info. Although it would be theoretically possible if I used aggressive scanners I might find you by mac so I suggested you remove it.

I can understand wanting to learn and do this on your own. Here is an excellent place to begin. Just start at the top and work through all the information there. I really respect someone who would like to learn it themselves. Here's the link:

If i were you, I would try and download service pack 1 and 2, installing them to your new comp, and then retry installing your drivers.

To be honest I can't figure why you're having these issues, I'm fairly certain what I said should had worked, so, installing service pack 1 and 2, should at least get your comp back to spec to install said driver.

Hope that makes sense.

If all it says is that you just typed in ipconfig. Here is what I get when I type in ipconfig.
Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version X.XXX]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME>
When I type in ipconfig /all (using the /all switch) here is what I get:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

        Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Computersname
        Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
        Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
        IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter

        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : (THIS IS THE MAC ADDRESS REMOVE IT)

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME>
Yours may look slightly different as I'm using a virtual machine. If yours doesn't have a message about an ethernet adapter you need to go to your My Computer (right click choose properties), from there choose Hardware and look under Network Adapters. Do you have one listed? If yes does it have a Yellow Exclamation point over it.

did you get that XP to the virus loading fields (internet explorer can navigate) yet?

I have resurrected many a PC and Mac from scratch with new softs for years, I own a company. so tell me what you need in PM if you want. You might have to start over but it's cool if you get the right advice this time:joint:

Idk what to tell you, I typed in ipconfig and it did what I said. And then I typed.in ipconfig /all, and got the same.

I am just going to reinstall it again. It only takes about 20 minutes. So before I get started...

I need the Ethernet Driver, Windows Installer, and the .Net Framework?

yes, you should have all the drivers for you Motherboard already downloaded before you reinstall the Windows Poop Suite (XP) ... (lol i'm drinking heavily) anyway, have .net too of course, but what version of XP you installing? I have the latest version available and I have installed it on many machines. XP is not supported by microsoft very much so I would have no problem with finding a clean copy to download if you are using less than Service Pack 3
