Setting Up my Inline Fan and Carbon Filter. What do you think?

My Plan
I have a 4" carbon filter and 4" fan. NO air cooled lights.

What I'm thinking:

|Duct<>FAN<>Filter<>empty space in room|
<>=to
| = wall of room
:)
No space between filter and fan (they will be connected together). Very little space between other side of fan going out of the room. This way air is sucked through the filter, into the fan, and out the room? Duct tape to seal.

The Questions
Do I need to use actual ducting or can I just use this Bristol board, since I don't want to spend $20 on ducting and I only need a couple inches (3-4").
Suggestions for hanging it? Zip-ties? Metal plumbers wire? Bungie-cord? I do not plan on screwing the fan to the wall.
I am putting this into a box in my room. Anyone have any experience with keeping the noise down to a minimum?

If I have a room within a big room, can I exhaust the air into the big room? And leave a window cracked for air circulation within the larger room? I do not want to get too complicated with this especially right now.

make the ducting as short as possible and with a minimum of bends, and yea some fresh air in the room your intake is located in (I run some spare ducting to a hall way for that purpose)

Alright thats great. The picture is pretty much what I'm going to do, just no ducting between the fan and filter. If I can get away with it maybe fan straight out the grow room no ducting?

Is there a difference between vinyl ducting and metal ducting? I might just use a connector duct as my ducting from van out the room.

I mounted one of my fans close enough to the wall that the flange is through it. Haven't had any issues with it. NOt sure about difference in ducting types.

diffence in ducting is the internal surface. metal ducting has a smoother surface witch results in less air turbulance and more effecient ventilation. if your only running a four inch fan and filter in a small room you shouldnt have to worry about the difference.
