hello, im a newb grower this is my first time really i appreciate the help ^_^

ok my current setup is just some reg seeds in cut off 2 liter bottles, with a 75w florecent light. Luckily i have a pay bonus coming my way and want to invest in a decent light. Now going off what i've been reading High pressure sodium lights are best for flowering, and Metal Halide for Vegatative stages.. i was looking at a 400w HPS & MH Light with Ballast and timer etc.. my question is, Will 400w keep a 5 foot plant alive? and 400w wouldnt really effect my electric bill to the point of raising suspicion? heres a link to the light im looking at..

400 watt HPS+MH Hydroponic Grow Light 400w Sodium Lamp! - eBay (item 120313021506 end time Oct-18-08 15:02:00 PDT)

I would think that would be plenty of light for your plant. 400 watts wont affect your power bill too much. Most space heaters use more than double that. I got a light from those guys. Excellent sellers. Call the number on their website and they might give you a deal. Consider going digital for a few bucks more. They use less power and run cooler. I'm a newbie, but I have also a few hundred hours of research. Happy growing.

I gotta concur with Sober on this one -- a solid HPS light will do wonders over a CFL light. You might also consider just a plain HPS light rather than the MH/HPS light. I started with MH on the veg and HPS on the flower like most people. Over time, I've moved towards HPS on both sides of the operation. You can veg under HPS with no deliterious effects on the plants -- if anything you see pre-flowers earlier under an HPS. Just a thought.

I would also just suggest a regular hps it's cheaper, and I wouldn't go digital if you needed a bonus to buy a light just get a cheap mag ballast and treat yourself to something else with the rest.

I would also suggest you veg in a seperate area, it's much faster to turn around crops that way.

Even if it's just a 2'x1' cabinet or a flouro in a cardboard box for your veg area it would still be faster than running a single light and having to only either veg or flower at one time.

You don't wanna grow 5-foot plants indoors unless that bulb is hanging vertical down beside the plant(s).
