Sex plants before transplanting to super soil?

Hey everyone. Quick question for folks who use subs super soil and grow from seed... (first time with super soil, not my first organic soil grow)

I'm working with a 600 watt hps setup in a 4x4 enclosure I built. I've also got a little 1.5x2 cabinet lit by up to 8 cfls. I've already mixed up batch of super soil, and it's been doing its thing for about a week. I've got four 7-gal pots. And some small pots for starting... Etc, etc.

I'm planning to buy a pack of Pandoras Box for my next round. My plan is to start all 10 and hopefully get my 4 healthy females to plop in the 7-gals with super soil. The thing is, I don't have enough room (or resources to waste) to put all 10 in 7-gals and veg until they show sex.

I haven't worked with seeds much. I know most of you veg in 1 gal, then transplant to the big pot and super soil. Am I going to be able to sex them while they're still in the 1-gal's?

I'd say yes. I sexed in dixie cups and then transplanted, lol. I am pretty certain you will be fine in 1 gal pots. Once the 4th true node shows, you should be golden.

yeah bro, i flip to 12/12 at the fifth node in one gal, and sex in 5-7 days, then pinch/re-veg....always works great for me.....i start in quart pots, then transplant into 1 gal for sexing, then into 5's or 7's...good luck!

Hmm... Going 12/12 then switching back to veg sketches me out... Sounds like you haven't had problems, but it seems like that would be stressful to the plants.

For anyone who's grown Pandoras Box: Did it show sex early, or take its sweet time?

i have some pandy about 3 weeks into flower right now (in 7 gallon pots of sub's super soil) and they are from seed. i veg according to size the first time irun a strain and they averaged about 18 inches each when i could finally sex them all with accuracy, i do not know how many days into veg they were. i topped them very early at the second node, so this may have had an impact on how early the preflowers showed up. they showed sex while in 2 gallon pots and then got vegged another week or 2 in the 7 gallon pots. when i grow from clone i start them in 1 gal pots and transplant to super soil the day after i find the first root tips poking out the drainage holes. hope this helps my friend!

I actually did this exact scenario with Pandora's Box. Sex showed after 10 days once flipped to 12/12.....and no problems occurred from going back to veg for several weeks.

Here is what they looked like when I did the sexing. I think they would have shown sooner than 10 days if they were more mature plants.

Hmm... I fully believe you, but I think i'm going to wait it out until they show naturally. Hopefully they'll show soon enough that they still have enough time to veg in the 7's before flipping.

I wish I could find pandora clones. Local dispensary has tga seeds, and the occasional clones (grew out some tasty Space Queen they had). No pandoras box clones though...

Yeah although I didn't have any real problems arise, it slowed them down somewhat and I also think that in the future I will just let plants show naturally.

I did this... once.... I had such bad problems and the plants needed 6 weeks reveg, I ended up dumping 3 of them anyways because they just kept growing little viney branches where the buds should have been.

Moral of the story. Let them show naturally, lol. Luckily mine were cuts that I was sexing for a buddy, it added an extra month of time on when the plants would have shown naturally.

i do this every run, mostly for space reasons.....but i flip when they are about 6-8 inches tall......the early boys will start forming nuts in 3-4 days...they are culled.....whatever doesn't show in 5 days, are either female, or late showing male...which is recesively attractive for breeding.......this short flip, does not create much for stress.......esp when you top and transplant the plants right after it shows sex.......doing this as we speak.....5 beans, four days 12/12...three boys...90% sure the other two are girls which will get pinched and repotted, and immediatly back to 18 hours where they will naturally show within a few weeks....

I'd be curious to hear Subcool's thoughts on this (if he's around and has a second). Does anything get up-potted to 7-gals before it's sex is known?

I think I've read just about everything on the net that's been written about his method, but I don't remember learning this little piece.

First Medical Grow and Logistics of Sexing:

(For three patients), I've got 10 Vortex seedlings at 18 days old! 100% germination (Thanks Subcool!) And so far they are thriving and as pretty as can be : )

Currently they are under HO T5's, and soon to be transfered to Hortilux MH Blue at 18/6.

They are now in 1 gal "Roots" Organic, and we have our Super Soil mixed and waiting, and we plan to use Sub's Supersoil method, that He has so compassionately and generously documented for us all to share in his knowledge.

With My restictions on Foot Print Space and number of plants to consider, I am comming to the same decision point as far as logistics of sexing. And I agree, that flipping the young vegging plants on 12/12 and later revegging to Mothers also "sketches" me out a bit too, (Although, this could be a great topic for a comparative study? Anyone have an "Etch-a-Sketch" handy? ; )

At any decision, I like to default to the question; "What would Mother Nature Do?"
Since I am not in any hurry, I am thinking that when I top these babies, I can take the tops as clones and then subject these scions to 12/12 to accomplish sexing.

I am just hoping that my Topped Parents do not become root bound in the 1 gallon pots durring this process?

If neccessary, I suppose I can transplant the Parents to intermediate pots, (2 or 3 gallons) untill the Girls are determined?

And then I'll commit to the 7 gallon SS once the Mothers are revealed.

Anyone have experience with this?

all my tga's showed sex in 1 gal at about 12-18" in height.

i dont know how you did it, sub, but besides being dank, this is one of the coolest characteristics of your seeds. i use to grow back in 2000-2003 and never had my plants do this. but everyone of my TGA seedling did it....AO, chernobyl, DQ, QT.

is this a result of TGA breeding, or selective breeding through out the industry, or what?

Well... I sprung for a couple 2-foot, 4-bulb high output T5s, and I'm going to build myself a proper veg/clone/mother space. I'll take cuttings from any females I end up with from the Pandora seeds, and hopefully one of them will bbecome my first mother plant.

I'm ridiculously excited to start producing my own clones!!! My current round of clones from Harborside was supposed to be 8 White Widow. After about 5 weeks veg, I ended up with 1 sickly runt (killed), 4 spindly, odd looking plants (killed one off), and 3 beautiful, super healthy, happy ones. It's clear that I'm growing two different strains of herb, one of which (maybe?) is White Widow. Un-stoked...

Yes my Apollos all showed sex very early (less than one foot). Not sure on all TGA strains but for the apollo strains should be in luck.

Im happy I found this post as I am in the same scenario. Only im waiting for them to show sex before they move into 65 gal smartpots SS mix outside. Last year i re-vegged and it made them stretch like crazy. I was going to take a clones and sex them in 12/12 but Im thinking this year I will be letting them show naturally but they are 6wks old under 24 hr light and have not showed anything. Any thoughts on going down to 18 hr light to get them to show faster. The tga gear im running are AO and jillybean. Im also running some femmed SLH and Northern Lights Blue. Anyone sexed AO or Jilly naturally? How old when they showed?

I don't think they'll show faster under 18 hours. It's just a matter of maturity. Usually they hit it at around 1' -- sub's for me have shown at less (i kept'em squat :) ) -- on apollo around the time side branching really gets going is when preflowers start to form. Don't know on other TGA strains yet.
