Sexing Clones

I started a number of plants using regular seeds (Bodhi strains), two weeks ago. I would prefer to cull any males ASAP. I'm taking clones off the seed plants and putting them straight into 12/12 lighting, hoping the clones will show sex in a week or so. I'm not really interested in rooting them, just trying to sex them. Will the the unrooted clones show their sex in a week or so using this method?

Yes, but its not really accurate. Plants will show sex in veg 90% of the time between day 30-45. Prior to that the plant hasn't necessarily made up its mind. Just use a loop and watch the nodes. if you see a mushroom sticking out its a male. if you see a tear shaped gland its a female.

If you want to keep a male for any reason. Choose the one that takes the longest to show sex. If a few show sex at the same time .Choose the middle sized one.

Thanks hyroot, but will the unrooted clones show sex under 12/12 lighting OR do I need to root them before putting them under 12/12 lighting?

They will show sex unrooted in a cup of water. It may not be accurate. I tried it once. it showed females. Then one plant was a male and the other was a hermie. I don't do it anymore. There's no short cuts. If you don't time to wait then you shouldn't grow. Growing takes a long time, a lot of patience and a lot of work. It takes 6 months from seed to see what your final product is. Then the first gen clone grows differently than the seed most of the time. So you are really looking at a year to see what you have.

Yeah, I was searching for a shortcut...
I do have a few grows under my belt. I even make my own compost and worm castings. But I don't have any grow friends and have had to learn by trial and error mostly. I usually veg for 35-60 days, in either 7,10 or 12 gallon Smart Pots and have always waited for them to show their sex. I check each plant for sex every few days and they always seem to show somewhere between a week or two prior to 12/12 to a week or so after. I've read of the 'clone in a glass of water' trick to determine sex but didn't know that it's not accurate. On Sunday I put a few clones in Root Riots, in a dome, under 12/12, hoping to sex them in a few more days. Sounds like I'm going to have to toss them...

I'm an organic soil grower. Most of my friends that grow do hydro. I only have a few friends that do the same method I do. But they live an hour or 2 or 3 a way. This is a good place to learn and bounce ideas off of people. I've been doing it for years and years and I'm always learning something new.

Those clones. You could still flower them in half gal pots, get some smoke or something. Or give them away. I usually take clones the day they get moved into the flower room. That's just my lazy procrastination.

Nice to meet you, hyroot. I like your advice. I think it's going to save me a little time and a lot of soil. As soon as the clones root, I'll plant them in small pots and continue flowering them. Thank you!

Go to 12/12 in a couple days they show sex. Pull the males. Go back to 18/6. Cut clones. Root the clones and you know they are female and can veg all of them as long as you want
