I want to top once the plant hits 5th node for training purposes. I think topping slows down the original plants ability to show sex.
If I wait for the plant to show and don't top, I miss my opportunity to train.
I should have enough of a cutting from topping that I can flip.

Sex is almost always appearing at the 6th node and takes about 6 weeks from seed to show. Males show a little before females.

I've grown a handful of photoperiod regs and have never had an issue determining sex in veg. You just have to let the plant grow and eventually you will be able to see preflowers and then eventually you'll see some pistils on the females but I find it pretty easy to tell before that. Usually between day 30-40 from seed

Growing until the sex shows isn't always practical it depends on your goal, if youre happy to be left with x amount it's not a problem but if you want to fill your tent with clones/plants then revealing the sex is the way to go.

I posted a bit on this a few days ago.

Monster clone V Regular clone time difference

The smaller plant was cut/cloned after sexing plants on January 8th It's a long way to go re vegging. The bigger plant was cut/cloned from same plant only the plant was allowed to re veg first before cloning it again, that was on 27th of January. Today the smaller plant is 48 days old...

I can usually rework my canopy to make up for the pulled males, but sometimes there will be a cluster of them and the space never gets completely filled.

When I've that option I've no need to veg plants unnecessarily.
