Shnkrmn's Pickle Bucket Hempy Grow 2009

Happy New Year! I've been putting this off long enough. I switched the lights on my three big girls on Christmas Eve. They started as clones 3 months ago (I forget!) and have been vegging first in 2 gallon pails under a bank of 4 65W CFLs, and then transferred to 5 gallon pickle buckets and moved under 2 600W HPS. They have been providing many cuttings, but it's time for them to show what they've really got while the new clones veg.

The are growing in 100% perlite. I use fox farm nutes and they are fed every other watering. Every other "water" watering, I really flush. Every watering also contains Hygrozyme and Cal-Mag plus. Ca deficiency has been the only issue, burning and killing some fan leaves, and now that they get 10 ml/gal every watering that seems to be resolved.

Anyway, here's some pix:

The three clones were taken from the same moms as the big plants, but a few weeks later, well into flowering, and yea, they rooted, and then went into major freakout revegging mode. The went back to fewer and fewer fan leaves and weirdass giant single blade leaves and sulked for at least 60 days before starting to grow new normal foliage. I just transferred them to 5 gal buckets yesterday. They had great roots, white and thick, and the transfer just didn't affect them at all.

I have the luxury of time to watch what happens to plants. It took me awhile to understand what was happening and I wish I had documented it more thoroughly, cause they got really weird for a while and I thought about tossing them out but I'm glad I didn't. I think they'll grow into respectable plants in 4 more weeks or so.

Thanks for looking.

So my enclosure is pretty crude I know. I wanted something I could knock down in a hurry in case I had a basement related problem requiring intruders (water heater, furnace, etc.) so the uprights are just wedged between the floor and the joists above. It's cold where I am, so I wanted to trap some heat for when the lights are off. I bought some cheap insulation board, which at least stops drafts and then put reflective insulation over that. Does anyone use this stuff called Reflectix? It's basically bubblewrap with a reflective layer of aluminum deposited on it. Sounds like mylar to me! Anyway, it's waterproof, lightweight, probably has a decent light reflective capacity and I like it.

Those are some nice trees you have there. Good luck with those clones. Sounds like a lot of work. I would of given up on them a long time ago. Hope they produce for you.

Hey DB, thanks for coming by. Yeah, I'm really hoping for some righteous porn from this grow, and when it's done I should have some equally elegant ladies to take its place; ladies who will also have their offspring waiting in the wings. Maybe it's not a harvest every two weeks, but it's a perpetual mountain 'o bud.:leaf::leaf::leaf::leaf:

Lol, well they are doing all the work. And they can see a box of new cuttings nearby, so they know they can be replaced, heheh. I sort of torched my last grow :-( and had to harvest early, so I had incentive to hang on to all the live material I had, otherwise it would have been back to seed!

Get it up.... Get it in.... And get in down...! Perpetual is a killer..
As long as it brings a smile...

I would not want to be harvesting every two wks... It would kill me...!
I grow enough so i just harvest three trees every 8 wks, it timed out now
that i take one down about every four...!

I have a half p' in the closet cured, five diff' strains...! I dont even need the
next harv' cumming...! "its just work now" but i have too! Need the med's...!!!
But running like this for eight yrs. Is why the calanders...! Its just timming and
cycles..! Fun and first but now... Taking a 6' tree down is a bitch...!

I'm not sure how long this will take to finish. If it's 8 weeks, cool, that's when I'll flower the next batch, if it's twelve weeks, even better, cause you're right, harvest is the real hard work of this whole deal, so why do it too often?:lol:

So it's perpetual grow, but not perpetual harvest. But the calendar is still essential!

Looking very nice!! I like the pickle bucket pic. The only problem I ever had with my hempy was cured with Cal-Mag but everything else went great. I've got some Columbain red haze and Kali Mist under 400w MH and growing in coco coir and they are MONSTERS!! Gonna switch to HPS & 12/12 tomorrow or they will over grow my height limitation.

Thanks for looking Boneman. I think growing entirely under HPS has kept my plants really compact considering how long they have vegged. If I got MH bulbs I would have to top and lst but I like growing natural shaped plants. I'm still a little worried about where these are going to end up heightwise.

Are you going to journal this next cycle? I'm interested in big hempy plants and would love to see yours.

Hi Earl, glad you could take a look.

So the buckets were really light today. I drenched each with two gallons of pH 5.8 water. Almost 1/2 came back out at pretty much the same pH. ppms going in were 250 and 480 coming out, so I must be flushing something. Next watering they are getting Tiger Bloom for the first time, so I want the res to be fairly empty of nutrients.

Noticeable buds are forming. Actually every node is covered in pistils. It's a good thing the branches are sturdy because I'm using one of my 600 watters as a side light. I hope to get lots of action on the lower branches.

My temps are getting down around 59-60 when the lights have been off for a few hours. I'm thinking of sticking a tiny space heater in there.

I'm having trouble uploading today's pix. Sorry about that. I'll try a little later.
