I suppose that'll mostly come down to space and cost. I know near nothing about hydro, but soil tends to be recommended for beginners because it's cheaper, more forgiving of mistakes (over fertilizing, etc.), and involves less micromanagement (pumps, hoses and all that can gunk up).
A friend of mine used to swear by hydro and has gotten pretty good results. The both of us are new to growing and went in opposite directions when it came to the decision between soil and hydro, me, for economic reasons. I just couldn't afford the set up at the time- could barely get a light and seeds. I guess it's also due to the fact tend to be rather minimalistic in things that I do, preferring a more hands off approach (eg: lazy fuck).
That said, last I've heard he's been using soil, if growing at all. Last time around, mold killed him.
But that's just my (limited) experience. I'm sure someone with knowledge in hydro could offer better advice and insight.
Good luck with that
