Should I help the sprout?

Hey man, I wouldn't worry at all. Seriously like 3 or more of my 5 sprouts looked like this when they first popped, they really don't turn green until like 24 hours later I think. Each of my seedlings that looked like that are turning out very healthy. So no worries, treat em right and they will reward you. I'm 99% sure this one will too. :weed:

And the guy is right about the membrane type thing.. if it hasn't opened just slide it off gently. They're not as fragile as some people seem to think they are (atleast in my experience..)

Oh but FYI, If you can at all, keep a humidity dome with it - I think this may be a major factor in these types of seedlings surviving - only reason is that I think premature seedlings can die from drying out - maybe this is what happened to other peoples, mine worked very well in a humidity dome with sprays of cool mist every few hours.

Hey everyone

So far so good

Here is a pic of it greenin up.

I haven't put a dome over it as i'm using two cfl bulbs that are only 9 watts.
They are only 550 lumens, and are 6500K.

Once the sprout gets bigger i'll throw in my two other cfl's that are 27 watts.
I lost the packet for them but i'm sure there 10000 lumens, and i know they are 6500K.

I am documenting everything that's happening and what I had to do with pics, I will
upload a journal when i'm ready.

Also again if anyone is interested I have a webcam watching it taking pictures once a minute.

the two first leaves you see there are called cotyledons

the marijauna plant is a eudicot, which means it has two cotyledons.....firstly they arent true leaves really, kinda just packets of stored energy mostly. you can tell its a eudicot also by noticing it has a tap-root as well as non-parallel veins in its branching leaves.

by picking the empty seed coat off, you wont be doing much, you can do it (if your delicate) but it should fall off in a matter of days anyhow and there is no real point, seeing as how cotyledons dont really need light so much (not saying leave the plant in the dark)

hold the fuck up. i'm competition for the people YOU buy seeds from! i've been growing for over 20 years, and hundreds more plant varieties than pot! however, since you guys seem to know everything about nothing, i guess i better lend a hand to those in need less people liek you put them on the wrong path.

i BREED medical marijuana, i don't just grow it. when i germinate seeds, i germ no less than one hundred at one time. i've seen more seedlings than most will ever dream of. don't tell me what's normal and what isn't, just because you used prefertilized soil once and failed. that isn't the seedlings' fault, it's yours. always run water through the soil first, and presoak in ph'd water if peat based (as all peat based soils are from 5.0-6.0 ph).

im always open to help and be helped!! i only tried to offer my opinion and i think what i said is right that by increasing humidity and keeping it for half a day in darkness it woul increase its survival chances!! as was said cotyledons dont need much light so by doing those two things and having a warm temp you try emulating the state it was in when it was in its shell!! and its shell was forcefully removed it didnt drop off!! u maybe grow so many plants u forget the value 1 has for some!! im not trying to be an ass or a know it all and i apoligise if i made u feel in such a way i just tried to help!! peace and love

the thing about seed shells is they're designed to be dropped before the seedling sprouts. if this doesn't happen, the shell and membrane become much tougher and harder, and nearly impossible for the seedling to break through. this is because we plant seeds so shallow, instead of under a blanket of leaves dropped the previous fall...

now, the inside of the seed is an embryo, and that embryo is white. it has nutrients stored to grow a tap root and do some geotropism and phototropism, but that's about it. so, once the stretch out starts, those cotyledons act as solar panels, catching any available light. this light is used to create the first actual chlorophyll. so, the leaves go from white to green. this is normal for almost any plant that is grown from seed, and can be demonstrated by removing just about any house plant from it's pot, and looking at the tissue below the soil line.

so, all in all, helping out is better than leaving alone. you stand a greater chance of losing the seedling to constriction/suffocation than you do injury from removing the husk.

no worries,im not here to start beef or act as a kid so i had to explain my position,
i had the same thing happen to me i had my babies pop out with the shell stuck on it so i helped it free itself its cotyledons were pale white by the time i got back home from work it was dead!! it had completely dried up!! so i thought which the best way would have been to try and save a seedling in such a state!! i think that if i had put my seedling in a dark and humidified place it would increase its chances of surviving am i wrong?? thanks!!!

dark, no, humid? yes. starting seeds in a clone dome, in peat pucks works very well; i've never had a helmet on those.

the one that died might have had a broken cotyledon. i've damaged seedlings before, breaking or ripping off one cotyledon, which stunts growth for about a week, leaving you with a runt. they should still grow fine. too much light or too much heat can be bad or too much water.... but the color is not; it's normal. the green comes after the leaves have been exposed to light.
