I'm a little confused too. Roots should NEVER be exposed. If they get left in direct sunlight, really any sunlight, your plant will die. Roots need to be buried in dirt where they can bring nutrients to the plant, and if you're using containers make sure they're not clear. Hope that helps.

Haha, i think he was talking about lining his holes with something like chicken wire or something stronger to protect it from burrowing animals, such as gophers and moles. I have a gopher who likes to burrow near my plot, I was thinking the same thing, but you're probably gonna need something with a smaller screen opening than chicken wire, and heavier gague too. Not a horrible idea if you have gophers.

I used chicken wire in the holes last year to stop the rabbits, an gophers from burrowing into the cages I made.
VERY IMPORTANT to use em.

This year im Using 5 gal bucket planters for root protection, an to keep the sourounding soil from sucking my soil dry.......

"Euphorbia lathyris (Caper Spurge or Paper Spurge) is a species of spurge native to southern Europe (France, Italy, Greece, and possibly southern England), northwest Africa, and eastward through southwest Asia to western China.[1][2][3]
Other names occasionally used include Gopher Spurge, Gopher Plant or Mole Plant

All parts of the plant, including the seeds and roots are poisonous. Handling may cause skin irritation as the plant produces latex. While poisonous to humans and most livestock, goats sometimes eat it and are immune to the toxin. However, the toxin can be passed through the goat's milk."

No, I do not want to plant this near my plot, I have a habit of touching plants and touching my eyes, the last thing I need in my garden is a poisonous plant that causes skin irritation.

thats a bad habit, you might want to work on that.

I would not worry about protecting your roots with a wire protectant its simply not worth it unless you have had serious issues in the past. If anything use chicken wire around the small clone or seedlings to protect it from deer, rabbits ect. it will also deter such animals as squirrels from digging up your new plant. I Have growing outdoors for many years and have never had a problem with gophers tunneling through my hole only Earthworms and they are welcome all day
