this is a mango haze leaning pheno a 14+ weeks sativa it yielded 21 oz for a single plant

what you describe as (airy) are foxtailing colas which is a standard trait of mango haze

come to think of it i do not think i have seen you post a single plant, are you another uncle ben a bullshitter that grows fruit trees ?

I spent plenty of time with plants.. I don't grow mj anymore.. it got boring,repetitive and such.

I'm gonna throw a plant in the backyard this spring though.

OK, let's try it this way..
I have a house, I put 100 10 x10 solar panels on the .roof.. the 10 x 10 solar panels would equal large fan leaves..
I have a second home, identical everything, except I took down the 100 10 x10 solar panels , ie, cut off all the fan leaves, and replaced them with 20 2 x 2 solar panels , ie, sugar leaves..
Now, which scenario do you think would bring my house more electric, the 100 20 x 20, or the 20 2 x 2? Why would you or anyone think that the same wouldn't apply for plants?

I think it is pretty common knowledge that fluoro can't do what an HID can do.
sarcasm?

That said.. i've seen people do better with 250 watts floro than most people on these boards do with a 600 hps.

With THAT said.. look at the conversation we are having.. we are discussing whether we should remove leaves or not from a plant that produces flowers with the energy from photosynthesis.. :wall:

ok, 1 fan = 1 10x10 panel
1 bud= 100 2x2 panel

it appears you are proposing that cutting the fans is beneficial.

this could most easily be solved by simple math

100x10x10=10000 sq. ft

20x2x2=80 sq. ft.

fan leaves win.

just sayin.

and that plant from skunkdoc was a pretty nice one.

doesn't look airy to me. in fact those colas were heavy enough he had them tied up.

Might want to reread my post Joe, as surely I was saying 100 20x 20 panels , ie fan leaves, provide more energy then 20 2 x 2 panels, ie sugar leaves..
 
I would trim almost every fan leaf off. I have posted about this 6 weeks ago and then about 2 or 3 weeks ago . I have it all dry I thought I was going to pull 30 % more. but the number was incorrect ! I actually am average about 40 to 50 % more !! just by takeing those fan leaves off in flower after the buds get 1/4 inch thick I chopped the leaves off and used bamboo poles to purse the branches straight up so I could add more plants per light and the buds were getting way more light. there is an artile some one told me to read on (high times ) talking about fan leafs . I rolled the dice on it. and I love the end results. (hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee buds ) not a bunch of pop corn buds and a box of garbage fan leafs .
 
sativa strains grow well with only the small leaves that pop out of the buds
and the short stem leaves that pop out of colas, the larger fan leaves can be removed
if your aim is maximum yield, you can fit more plants and buds in the space if the leaves are removed
the result is more colas in a given space but for me personally this is much more suited to sativa hybrids

Let's see some pix of a side by side, same strain, one you cut off all those pesky leaves, and the second one you leave them..

an important part of that bit (light levels).. high production of trichomes does NOT equal high potency, necessarily.

genetics dictate potential and environment effects it.. not all trichomes are equal by weight or volume..

When a plant is being beat down with light levels near the top... it loses potency.

there are a few really nice ones in there. But more mediocre sized buds.

If you really believe trimming all the fans off is the right way to go.

try running sog. @ 4 plants/sq. ft. even at this tight I assure you the fan leaves are beneficial.

there are nothing BUT colas and fans in sog. Without the fans....you get no colas.
 
This debate can go on for years and years and years and years, oh wait it already has.

It would probably be better to just necro a similar thread and add to the discussion there.
When I googled this a while back because I was skeptical there was thousands of threads just like this one.
No offense to anyone, but at this point, it just seems like people bumping egos and heads.
