you have to switch to flower mode to see sex. It takes three weeks and you have to have 12/12 light schedule.
All the strains that I've grown start showing preflowers in veg once they got to a certain point. Preflowers are hairs that they will start putting out at nodes (Normally 2 a node.) if they're female. I can't say how certain they are, as the majority of seeds I've popped have been fems. I can say that all my females have had them though, and I've never had a male with them. For the OP; in my experience, it's been 40 days on the high end for preflowers. Like I said though, not a total authority on the subject; it could vary depending on strain and conditions, so I can't give you a solid timeframe. Assuming one even exists.

This is just plan wrong, plants will start to show preflowers when that plant reaches maturity. This is different between strains, and even just between plants. It can also depend on how much stress you put the plant under. More stress equals slower growth/maturation. If you flower a plant before it shows preflowers(force flowering) it may take longer for it to begin flowering since the genetics weren't mature. On the flip side if you are using clones that have been around just a little while, they will likely flower much faster since they are already mature.

Personally I've never had a plant take 3 weeks to show sex. I just put 2 plants into flower a few weeks ago that were 100% sativa, and were not yet "mature". I expected it to take a bit longer, but nope 12 days and they both showed a set of nuts and got chopped. If you wanna flip it go for it, its gotta be big enough at this point preflowers or not.

Look for sex at the 3rd node. You'll notice the 2 hairs that show female/ or the one hair with 2 balls if its a male plant. The plant matures from the bottom up. You'll notice even in flower the trichromes will turn milky then translucent to amber all starting twords the bottom.

I've always noticed more amber at the tops, and then slower changing of the undergrowth.

pre-flowers, which are pistils (usually around the 3rd or 4th node), should show up in veg between 4-6 weeks.

or, you can flip them to 12-12, wait 2-3 weeks and see that way too

We're both right.
