Ladies and gentlemen,
I'm happy to announce that I have, for the first time ever, both made and smoked hash oil! While it's surely the dirtiest, black-greenest, harshest, nastiest oil around, I don't care because I made it, smoked it, and got pretty high!
Not too bad for a bunch of stems I would have trashed otherwise, and a nice little introduction to the joys of oil!
Anyway, I forgot to take pictures of the early part, but I'll fill-in as best as I can. I started with a jar of everclear and about 4 grams of stems and such that had been soaking for about three months.
I strained the plant matter out with my fancy little tea strainer. It wasn't nearly as handy as I would have hoped for, but the screen (as opposed to the holey) side did a good job.
I strained into a small pyrex dish, which I used for the inner part of my double boiler. To make the other part of the double boiler, I put some water in a small pot, and put the wood from clothes pins at the bottom to keep the pyrex dish from touching, and simply put the pyrex dish on top, on medium-high heat.
The now empty jar, for some reason (sorry, I was high when I uploaded, and this one is utterly unnecessary, but it here now, so, there you have it).
And, after double boiling for about 40 minutes, then sitting near a fan for another few hours, we have the dirty, dirty oil.
And now that it's almost all gone, having been smoked atop bowls for the past couple days, I think I have learned a lot:
1) Don't soak for so long, to avoid getting the other crap (chlorophyll, terpenes, etc.). Though I'm not sure this would work as well with stems, as opposed to flowers, due to the much lower THC content, I'll likely try flowers next time too.
2) If I'm planning to smoke it, there's no need to try to decarb it, as that'll happen then anyway. Instead, I could try to go the medshed route and make a dropper tincture or something (still thinking about trying honey, but forgot this time until it was too late).
3) Be more active with extracting the gooey goodness that I want. In other words, perhaps try to freeze the flowers and everclear beforehand next time. Shake it up a bit more (or find some other way of applying the everclear to the weed to encourage extraction -- I don't know, just a sketchy thought at this point) during the extraction. Et cetera.
