Hello,
I wanted to write something based on my own experience.
Ways of silencing ventilation :
-Use bigger fan , but dim it down to move air slower. Very effective in my opinion
-Use silencer (i have 1m long 160mm silencer , it makes a small difference but imo not much more than insulated ducting , might depend on brand)
-Use insulated ducting (use ducting thats soft , i bought some cheap and stiff aluminium ducting and it made lot of noise)
-Wrap the fan in planket or sleeping bag (For the money this is very good. This tip reduced the noise to half)
-Use for example 160mm fan but make it so that the ducting is 200mm right afterwards, i dont have experience on this
-Carbon filter silences pretty much (imo its most effective if you can hook the fan straight to it)
-Make sure that the airflow is not restriced , your fan starts sounding like vacuum cleaner if it has to work hard
-Two 400m3 fans make less noise than one 800m3 (this might not necessarily always be so , but usually yes)
-Build mdf box for the fan and insulate it with something. I have 2500m3 insulated mdf box fan and i can say , dimmed down just a little bit , it makes less noise than my 800m3 basic style fan.
-There are some new style fans , td silent they are called. Imo they make less noise than the older design basic fans.
-If vibration causes noise , hang your stuff , use rubber to minimize vibrations
-Make things fit tight. Use duct tape or those round tighteners with screw
Other stuff:
-If you plan to do dwc , dont understimate the noise that the air pumps and stones can make. With wrong gear it can be easily worse than your fan.
-About the stones: I have found that those long rubber tube style air stones make least noise. They also make smaller bubbles which i was at first worried but it havent made difference in growth. Worst stones by sound generally have been the smallest ones.
-About the air pumps : If you need like 8 outputs , id rather maybe buy two 4 output ones than one bigger one. Ask if you can test the pump at store and compare. In my opinion , buying a pump that you can dim down is useless. Say you have 2w pump , youll want to use all the air it can make. Hang your pump , most of them produce the air by vibrating so it makes a difference (atleast 1/3). The most silent air pump ive had has been a little blue pump that came with gh waterfarm. It only has one output but i can recommend it.
-Magnetic ballasts can cause some low humming noise. If you have very silent room then you can hear it. Its really nothing but using digital ballast will overcome that.
Im out of ideas for anything else that makes noise. I got hyped by the sleeping bag wrap method and its small effectiveness so i decided to put something helpful together.
