Simple 400 Watt HPS Ventilation Question

So one of my buddy's is very curious to know how much ventilation is needed for a 4' x 2' x 6' Closet.
She's going to run a 400 Watt HPS/MH in there. The temps in the bedroom are 74F.

Is a 6" booster fan good enough for her situation(160CFM), or is a 6" Inline with a Speed Controller in order?
She's a tight-wad with money, all good, economy's fucked up in our city. Oh and it's going to be vented in her bedroom.
& obviously an oscillating fan will be hung.

Booster $30-$50
Inline W/ Speedster $150-$175

Thanks everyone! :peace:

well, temps might have to be lower since shes venting into the same room and a 400w vented into the same room is basically a mini heater in my opinion. a window unit ac might need to be added as well if shes using centeral air because centeral air kills the light bill more then a window unit. i would suggest a 6 inch inline fan so she can attach a carbon filter to it, and it will take the smell out too. you should be able to find a inline fan and filter for 150 or so.. speed controller isnt really needed.. i got one and i dont even use it..

I'm no expert and new here but the 6 inch would be better special if add carbon scrubber.
I Appreciate that the first post you made is your opinion on the matter <3

Window unit out of the question. I'm sure she would rather vent straight out the window instead lol.
Also she made a remark about not caring about the smell as long as it's being vented in her bedroom.

Also does anyone have experience here about venting into the same bedroom? I'd imagine the heat would disspate itself through the size of the room and not make it that hot.
Maybe 80-84 Degress if the central ac is on 74. Any opinions on that?

Let me put it this way.

I use a 3x3x6 tent and a 400w HPS & a 4"170cfm inline. The 4" inline keeps lights on temps (in the tent) 10°F above ambient temps (temp of room the tent sits in and draws it's fresh air from).

If your ambient temp is 74°F then your lights on temps (in the tent) will be about 10°F above the ambient, and venting that hot air back into the room will thus raisr the ambient temp up 10°F thus making the room about 84°F.

Tell her,do it right,or don't do it at all.

Here's a good light wattage to airflow/temp difference load line.

Note the line for a 400w HID and where 170cfm meet and the temp diff...10-12°F.

By looking at this chart we can guesstimate that a 600w HID coupled with 440cfm of airflow will maintain a lights on temp of 4-5°F above ambient tdiff. But due to pressure losses from carbon filter and ducting it would be more like 350cfm so a tdiff of 5-6°F.

Exhaust into an attic, another room,or out a window via a window exhaust box, otherwise you'll just be raising ambient temps thus raising tent temps.

I like to keep my ambient at 65°F-70°F so I gey a lights on temp (in tent) of 75°F-78°F...right in the sweet spot...but I'm using a 4" 170cfm inline.

It's a closet. Not tent.
So you think she should just vent outside or something?
Idk bro she needs to make a fucking account and do this herself.. this is rediculous lol.

This inline fan would solve her needs since it's cheap at $80.00 with free shipping and blows 435 CFM. She needs a carbon filter too. The carbon filter will pull the heat and odor out and she can use the window and run some flexible 6" duct toward the window and disguise the window like the photo below. She can also flower lights on at night from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM , that way the closet will be even cooler with lights-on running thru the night.

i vent into the same room because I cheaped out on a tent and the holes aren't big enough anyways I can't vent properly because of it I us a 10k btu ac temp is 65 degrees in the tent is 75-80 with a 600w vented into the same room. If she vents into the same room a window unit is needed. And no matter how she vents i would get a filter do odor or else she might as well grow outside

I added an air condition duct from my home system to my grow closet.
Keeps a nice 74-76 degrees.

Is this based on an air cooled light or cooltube type light?

You have a 400watt space heater in the closet venting heated air into a (presumably) closed bedroom for 12 to 18 hours a day.

It WILL get uncomfortably warm unless you find a way to cool the room, or vent the air outside. Remember, too, that the air is also going to be humid.

Being cheap up front will only cost you $$$ and possibly your freedom, down the road.

It's not that bad, just run 12/12 at night. I had to dim my 400 down to 75% because its too hot in the room and there is no where to vent to but the room. Just keep the door open and get good airflow going. My temps get up to 86 and that's as high as it goes. Also add some c02 that will really help with higher temps going on.

Hi guys quick question regarding tents. Mine is 1.2mx1.2m sitting In corner of bedroom extraction fan leading out to window. 4 x 6" fans in there and door of tent open. My temp in room is 23c but temp in tent ? No lower than 34c! It's been sat at 28 but as soon as I brought the light down ready for veg the temps shot up, should I invest in a/c that I can control
My bedroom temp with? Keeping the tent temp down? X
