Smart and inexpensive pet?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a little bit of company. I already have a dog, but he's more my mothers dog, and he's a couch potato hehe.

So I'm looking for a pet that is smart and not too expensive. I already had a Ball Python which I loved, but it's a lot of expenses to get started, and although mine was very tame, I wouldn't categorize it as smart.

Something for around 100$ to start out.
I was thinking of a rat or 2.
Any other ideas?

I have a rat - Nicodemus. Hes a 1yr old champagne mink. He knows a bunch of tricks. Very friendly and curious.

I would checkout ferrets if you like the sound of rats. Also very bright and very loveable. Some places/pet shops don't carry them. You can still find breeders. Just scour your area. Both are fairly cheap to feed and house. Make sure you have all the necessities before becoming a "parent". Good luck.

Yes ferrets would be a great idea. I actually "babysat" one for a week. It actually was a ton of fun.

I worked in a pet store and rabbits were the ones I had the most trouble with...it's really a Love/Hate thing. They're real shit machines which is a turn off to me. But yes they are really soft and nice to pet.

I had a ferret. Was by far the coolest pet I've ever had. He only ever bit once and that was when I held him as a baby in the pet store for the first time xD

The only complaint is the smell. I used to bathe mine 3 times a week and had a special spray for his fur to keep it conditioned.

I like parrots a lot, but only if they were raised by me. xD Smart, cheap once established, can just be mean and dangerous if not raised properly.

Hehe I want a smart pet to teach him/her the basic "not-to-do's".

I'd get a dog, but I fear that's gonna be too expensive for me. Ferrets might also be an issue with all the vet treatments and vaccinations required.

Parrots are awesome pets - but need constant attention and stimulation otherwise they tend to regress and get super bitchy.

I can totally relate.

I have a pet rock. It cute sweet and doesn't shit on the floor. As far as smart,he is smart enough to do what he wants instead of what I tell him to do. Very cheap to feed and house. Cleanup is a breeze. I didn't pay very much to get him and vet bills are reasonable i guess. He is very smart but only does two tricks, sit and stay. I'm starting to get into breeding now so if you need one you can have pick of the litter.

Hope you find the perfect companion.

I have a Cockatiel currently. He's tame and friendly, but he has his quirks from time to time. I hold him daily for the most part, but he get's bitchy time to time. Mostly when he's malting though xD

I really can't complain. I've never had a bird more tame than he is, I can literally manipulate any part of his body without getting seriously bit or hated permanently for it, without hurting him obviously.

A female human about your own age could be of benefit, if you get on you may breed with her, it may takes considerable investment on your part initially, but according to relationship advice on other sites theres a 60% chance of succeeding ...for example .....!

Had birds my whole life til about 10 years ago(bird dogs and birds didn't work) I either had a cockatiel or parakeet, both are cool, strong personality and playful.if you go with a bird DO NOT buy from a pet store.with birds hand raised is the way to go !!
They can be like a high maintenance girl sometimes...
