I had asked a question a while back and no one seem to have a definative answer..
Will roots grow through smart pots?
I had asked this originally because I was going to set coco filled smart pots on a coco filled 4'x4' tray and let them root through the smart pots and into the trays..I decided against it, but may try it on my next grow.

Anyway here are a couple of pics of my plants after 10 days in 7 gal coco medium smart pots..you can see the roots are already comming through smart pots..

Just an FYI for anyone interested

I should add that I actually had to make sure I had space between my pots because they were starting to root into the adjacent pots.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they rely on good airflow around the bags to allow the soil to dry out. I think it's the dry soil that's actually 'pruning' the roots - the roots grow until they find consistently dry soil and then stop.

The good thing is that the roots don't wrap around the outside of the pot. The bad thing is that you're probably losing a bit of soil volume around the edges where the roots don't go.

I've done several soil grows in containers between 1 and 5 gallons, and for every one I remove the plant at the end and examine the root ball(actually I just want the dirt for my yard). I never recall having a plant that didn't spread nicely throughout the soil, even though the roots hit the edges and wrapped around. So maybe the premise these pots are based on is invalid? I'm still interested in them and might try them side-by-side with a normal pot in the future.

yes the roots will grow through the smart pots i use 5 gal bags and every grow has had roots 5-6 inches long between the floor and the bottom of the pot.
