This is my first grow and I'm about a week away from drying and curing my entire crop. I know most of the weight loss is from the drying period but when does the most smell changes occur? Is it during the cure or should the buds smell pretty good after they dry for a few days? I took a sample and now that's it's dried I was going to start my cure tonight but it smells very lame right now.

Perfectly grown buds should smell while you are growing them, getting stronger while you dry and improving immensely while you cure them.
Most strains are fairly strong smelling during flowering end, harvesting and drying, some don't really kick in until they're cured properly.
But you should be able to smell the type of odour they have when you harvest them and start drying them.
When did you harvest? What colour were the trichs?
Any chance of pictures?

same here plants not done but had some i clipped off a long time ago well few weeks

it will alsos become more pronounced in the curing process. that is when the lowers take on all the flavor and the bud becomes what u know it to be so it will get better and smell more with during but at the same time if ur plants don't smell while their growing their now growing to their full potential and there are facets you can improve on in your growing technique/method. but your buds will get significantly better in the curing process.. and how long did u take that nug? if u gonna harvest in a week and your already at 10% trichs i would assume use begun your flush? what are you doing to flush and how is the coloring of the cleaves looking any definiciancies?

alot of people will disagree with what im about to say but i find it to be true. if you trim your buds when there dry they will never lose there smell.

I've never heard about that before, do you cut off branches and then hang them to dry?
What is the argument for this working if you don't mind me asking?
I'm guessing it's along the lines of vital minerals and salts are allowed to be processed after harvest and while drying?
I don't see how it could add to never losing smell though.
I use curing for that ^^

if your bud is going to stink it will stink even when its wet. if your bud is boo boo and doesnt have a strong smell i dont care if you cure it for a year it wont smell. if you have sum kill that stinks and you trim it wet in my oppinion it goes through a grassy phase where it smells like hay kinda. take the same kill hang it up for 6 days then trim it and it stinks no matter where you put it. ready to goI've never heard about that before, do you cut off branches and then hang them to dry?

I agree, shite bud = shite smell no matter if you cure it.
However I've never had the problem of bud losing smell, which is why you don't trim until it's dry ye?
Maybe I'll try it when I harvest to see if there is a difference.
It sounds a bit weird though but worth a try I guess.

its alot easier to trim your scissors dont get gunky. and you will notice a big difference in the smell. try it on a plant

im gonna try this, this time around ........... my P.E. run is almost finished "all milky and about 20% amber" so i'm gonna take one and only pull the large fan leaves and leave all the sugar leaves. i hate having to keep alcohol close by to keep scissors clean LOL

leave your sugar leaf on if you don't the buds won't have a strong smell. i think the extra moisture allows a slower dry. i normally dont have to cure more than a day or two in a jar to get a super strong smell
In my opinion......
The smell stays throughout flowering and curing. If the nuggets are going to smell strong..... they usually smell strong before you cut and the aroma changes just little after curing.
If it smells fire while growing.... It will smell fire after the cure.

yep if your bud stinks it will allways stink. but it goes through a phase when you trim it wet but comes back when you cure. i just like to skip a step

thats exactly what i do with my whole crop 63 monsters. just have to make sure you cut them down in waves that way they dont get to dry as your trimming them. let me know how it works out for you

This is more strain related than it is drying/curing methods, G13 and White Rhino are great strains with low odor, my 23 yrs of harvesting some weed smells better growing.......some smells better after the cure.

i can keep the smell on my plants, if i jar them just when the outside is dry, but its a bit of a fiddle to avoid mold.
in my case i have low humidity year round.
plus my plants are very low smell plants, some strains just smell.
but.
even just stuffed into a wooden cabinet, in about 2 months, even though the smell never reappears, when you break up the bud, you get some smell and the taste is rather pronounced.
well, 1-2 months,depending on strain. (and thats stuff that was dried too quick and got that hay smell and taste) (though some strains just smell like hay when you cut it and dry it (gaining smell later or never)

Do you mean to tell me that a lot of people trim their buds while wet? dont think ive ever heard of that. I come from potheads and have been around pot and growing since i was a child. I have always chopped or yanked my plants, hang them upside down, cut the shade leaves off, and let them dry. After they are crispy outside and the smaller stems break(medium to large stems bend/crack but not break) I then trim up the buds and toss them in jars to cure. Ive never heard of people completely trimming the buds while wet. Sounds like a rookie/uneducated/rushed decision.

yeah i agree. i hear of alot of people trimming it wet. iv even had club owners tell me they want me to trim it wet lol idiots.
