Simply tuck the fan leaf back. Behind the bud you are trying to get light to. And bend the branch you want exposed with weights or LST to help. I do both.

That's the way I do it, why stress the plant unnecessarily? Personally I trim the lower 3-4 sets of branches, as mine seldom get enough light to fully fill out. It does seem like you get more gain on the tops as well, which means less trimming later. Keep it stupid simple is what I've heard or K.I.S.S.
My favorite saying on here. I trim the bottom branches about a 8" up so air can move around my plants top and bottom. But I leave all other leaves intact, especially the huge fan leaves that are the food factories. Oh it's "Keep It Simple, Stupid".

Dude, two things........
1 ) 50% say it's OK, 50% say don't touch.
All I can say is I cut 4 fan leaves from one of my plants, and all of a sudden it slowed the growth from what it had been doing the past 2 weeks.
You gotta make your own call on that one.
