Hayduke

Name is not duke.
George Washington Hayduke...or simply Hayduke is the main character in Edward Abbey's "Monkey Wrench Gang". He is a gun toting beer can littering (on the "litter" of paved roads) Eco-Terrorist who cuts down billboards with a chainsaw, spikes trees, and disables Earth destroying equipment with sand in the crankcase or by striking the dozer blade with a 4' pipe wrench, cracking it...Or floating a pontoon boat full of dynamite into the Glen Canyon Damn...restoring the flow of the Colorado...no compromise in the defense of Mother Earth.
Abbey was at least loosely associated with the Eco-"terror" group Earth First!, and I believe the Hayduke character, like others in his fiction are at least a close reflection of the writer himself, and in some cases...the stories are closer to fact than fiction. The Seldom Seen Garden...is from the same books, Hayduke's friend, "Seldom" with 3 wives in Utah to take care of...seldom seen by any of them.
While traveling in the west, look for graffiti on billboards, carved in pic-nic tables and trees or pot-a-potty walls proclaiming "Hayduke Lives"...the "fish symbol" of EarthFirst!ers as well as the sequel to the Monkey Wrench gang
So in the spirit of Green Civil Disobedience....Hayduke Lives!
