DJ it is all what you want, you can make a lot of holes, but you mustnt use them all. but maybe you get lot of clones and then you can choose the strongest for you. Good pump is: cheap, quiet, reliable. if you dont have sprinkles then you will do just fine with 200-400 gph pump. But airpump is more noisy, so pick that carefully.

I'm in a,6tall by 5 wide 5ft long tent with 1000w hps/mh. I figure I'd cut the tube into 2 4ft sections. How many plants could I fit.in tech 4ft pipe?

I have my plants roughly 8 inches apart so in a 4ft length you can put 6 or if you do 6 inches apart you can do 8 depends on the plants that you use. Indicas are going to bush on ya and sativas are going to grow tall

although you can plug unused sites and also check root growth from used sites in the unused site by simply taking out the pot.

ldeally an inch or less, but I found clogging from roots in the system above didn't allow me to run the pump 24/7, personally I'd rather have no standing water in the tube but it can't hurt to have an inch or so, if you find its flooding the tube like I did you'll have to cycle it.

I used sprayers in the tube , ended up not working that well since they clogged in time, as they would clog I'd just snap them off and left nothing but a hole for the water to spray from.soon the roots clogged the 1 inch drain in the tube, just a bit of flooding, I mainly cycle pumps anymore depending on the application.
