Soil

Okay, I have a few questions about soil. I'd like to just use the soil that's already there, but I know this may not be possible. So it looks like I need to get a soil test kit of some kind. Any recommendations here? And what am I looking for? I gather from reading that even if you do stick with the dirt that's already there, it's a good idea to loosen it up a bit before sowing?

And a random question to add on to this, after germing should the tap root be placed in a particular direction when sowing? And also, should I try to avoid rain when sowing?

Thanks!

test the soil (you can pick up soil test kits from most garden centers)

if the ph is around 6.5 - 6.8 then all is good.

it is a good idea to go and dig the soil before you plant.i try to do this a full month before i plant out.
i add my fertilizers /mulch and anything else that is required then as well, and give a damn good soaking

O4 is correct. The thing to keep in mind is that the plant needs to be kept moist, but at the same time, needs good drainage, and oyxgen. So how in the F---? This is where coco, perlite, mulch, etc. comes into play. Hard packed "dirt" denies oyxgen & root growth, as well as causing watering problems. Being a vetgetable gardener for 40 years, I was determined to use the dirt I had. After losing my Big Bid & Ice Babies (Big bucks), I started with the perlight, vercimulite, compost, potting soil & rockwool. You want the soil to hold moisture & for it to drain slowly. I fertilize (strickly) organic, "Medina Hasta Gro Plus", fish emution, molassas, (to feed the microbial life)whole grounded cornmeal (to kill fungi), Epson salt (for minerals), greensand for minerals also. A pinch of cow manure & red wiggler worms is "A good thing" also. See 'Growmarijuana.com. And folks, let's be careful out there!
