Spider: Friend or Foe

So today I found this little guy nestled in one of my girl's branches. My initial inclination is to let him stay so that he can catch and eat anything that might actually hurt her like gnats etc. and just watch closely for egg sacs. I just wanted to make sure this was the right move, so I decided to ask the experts. SO what are your guys thoughts? Let spidey stay? And if I do, should I wash off the webs before harvest or will pulling them off by hand be enough? (Tiny spider, tinier web. No dense webbing just long strands to catch random flyers) I can't imagine smoking a few random spider webs that I miss would be that harmful, seems like a small price to pay for a tiny dedicated anti-pest bodyguard. (The pic is zoomed in a lot, the spider is pretty tiny)
Let him stay or give him the boot?

Well if he is already there most likely he is already eating bugs. Spiders won't generally be around if there isn't a supply of food. Keep him, IMO he is an asset to your garden, let him help.

Cool beans! That's what I was thinking, I saw one or two gnats/fruit flies a few days ago, but I've been checking and haven't seen any since, so I probably have him to thank for that. (incidentally checking carefully for them is how I noticed him)

Wait until they start dropping on your head, then exterminate a few of them. Just a few though...they're part of the great food chain.

Looking at your picture reminds me of "Where's Waldo"... I C No Fricking Spider!!!

If it is a non aggressive, non toxic species let it stay. Until it tries to eat your face off.!

wow that is my worst nightmare! chilling with the plant and a spider dropping down from a branch aaarg.. I imagine it may have a benefit if you dont mind spiders.. though.. who knows how much web it will produce.. could end up ruing your buds

This was my little buddy for about 6-7 monthsDSC00271.jpg untill sadly he disappeared one day... :( but a few weeks later there were about 10-15 of em all over my plants. I was actually collecting moths/crickets/grass hoppers and throwing them in her web. here is a close up!!DSC00273.jpg She was about 2-3 inches across!!

Spiders are great, TILL THEY BITE YOUR FACE OFF

Lol Spiders ARE great. Probably one of the most beneficial 'bugs' you'll find. But they have fangs and some are dangerous to people and pets, so be careful with them. But if left alone, they can help with lots of bad bugs. Also, if its a web building spider it might be one of the kinds like orb weavers that eat their web every morning and remake it at night so it won't build up all over your plant.

In the summer, I let a spider set up shop under my little florescent light in the kitchen.
It always catches flys, gnats and other bugs.
One day in fall/early winter it will be gone.

That, sir, is f#$%ing terrifying. I have spiders that are like that here and they scare the balls out of me. Luckily the ones here don't spin webs, so there's no chance of my little web slinger growing up to be one of those monsters!
