Spread Out or Focused Light

Just wanted to get a little more information for my first grow, my question is, would it be better to have about 16 23 watt CFLs spread throughout my plants (not sure how many yet, germinating four, not sure how many will turn out to be females in flowering) or would it be better to have about 4 focused 68 watt CFLs (soft white 2700k of course) on the top of the plants and a couple lower wattage CFLs around the plant. What would you guys reccomend?

you want atleast 6500k lumens per plant starting out of CFLS , but CFLS arent' strong enough for when it comes to flowering really.
You can get a 150 watt hps fixture that plugs into a regular household outlet for like 69.99.
Thats what I got and I got pics of my plant at 22 days old if you'd like to see.
150 watt is for small grows up to 2-3 plants max.

Wow really? Is there a place where I could pick up one of those HPS lights locally for around that price?

For the CFl grow you'll want equal lighting all around the plant, not just the top. The CFL can only penetrate the foliage a few inches, unlike an HPS which can penetrate 1-2 feet.

No problem, also remember to get both 2700k and 6500k temperature lights to get a good spectrum for optimal plant growth.

holy shit that's some inexpensive stuff. almost TOO inexpensive. i actually found a system on that site for a 150 hps complete with reflector, bulb and ballast for just about 70 bucks. never heard of most of the brands but it is pretty damn cheap. i have serious doubts about the quality of the bulb but i've never used any of those products so i'm really just speculating anyway. about the cfl question, i find the lower watt ones more efficiant. if you are going to use the 68 watts i would only use them on the top and the smaller ones on the bottom. i believe that was your second option. i pick that one.

I have two 48w CFL globes (purchased here in Oz) which says it puts out 5000k, I also have a couple of 24Watters (2700k, 1550 Lumens).
Question is should I use these different lights for the different stages i.e Vegetative growth and flowering stage; or is it ok to use both lights at the same time?
My goal is to produce squatt plants no taller than 3' and I will top them for additional colas (big-ups to 'Uncle Ben').

dont get confused by the packaging colors, they don't mean a thing to do with the light spectrum they are using.

look on the back of your package or on the bulb and find the color temperature (K) of the specific bulb. Then, use 2300-2700k bulbs for flowering and 5600-6500k bulbs for vegging.

think of it on a line ....

pot likes to veg here ---------------------------------pot likes to flower here
Blue spectrum ------------- Mid Spectrum -------------- Red Spectrum
(6500k) --------------------(3500-4500k) -------------- (2300k-2700k)
