Sprouting seeds using napkins

the last time I did it, I used Viva paper towels. Wet the ppr towel, wring it out, place your seeds on there, fold it over, then fold it again. You can either put it in a ziploc bag or a jar with a lid. Put in a semi warm place and wait. Could take anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on the seed. Good luck!

Me personally... I'm worried about molds and what not growing... Here is what I do: soak 3 or 4 papertowels that have been folded over in half together in warm tap water. Wring them out until they are very moist but do not drip constantly. I then place my seeds inside, folding over papertowels to cover seeds. I add more warm water when I notice the papertowels are on the not-so-moist side. Usually within 3-5 days I have half inch tap roots and they're ready to go.

Heres a good question... have you been soaking your seeds in a small glass of water for 18-24 hours before putting them in moist papertowels? This softens the seed shell and allows for water to activate the seed embryo sooner. I learned this trick a couple years ago and I've never had a problem with this technique.

That sounds better to what I have been doing. I have been getting paper towels and putting the seeds on the Towell, wet them then fold one layer over them and wet again. Usually water standing in the plate and I place a bowel on top of the napkin and seeds and I have it in my grow room at a temp of 78 degrees. 1st couple of times it has dried out the seeds after I got off work. 12hr shift. I have tried soaking the seed in water until it drops which takes a day then wait until I get off work to put it in the napkin. Using the same procedure as above. The tap root will not grow any at all over several days and it looks like it has died. Have no clue why. I don't know if it had too much moisture, not enough moisture, too much heat not enough heat, does it need light?? All kinds of questions. I'm having as much problems of sprouting seeds as I am moving bud.

I use coffee filters,
i fold them in 1/2 and cut them in four. then I use a sprayer to moist the filters, 2-3 mist squirts will do. i fold 1 of the filter cuts in 1/2 put my seed or seeds, then keep folding the filter cuts put them in a sandwich bag one squirt of the sprayer (mist) into the bag before I seal it.......fold the sealed bag three times and put on top of water heater tank in the dark. .... ..18 - 32 hours to get them seeds to germinate. 100% success. had done this about three times with 100% good results.....got this from:

No reason to pre germ your complicating the process. Plant seed in dirt 1/2 inch deep cover with plastic wrap and wait check on it every day and when it sprouts in a week our so remove the plastic wrap and watch it grow...

Sorry everyones entitled to there own opinion but with all these silly ways of germin seeds makes me laugh. I brought 4 choco seeds and 4 purp haze and 1 blueberry cheese. Heavily soaked my medium and dropped the seeds 1/2 inch in there gently covering back over with my medium. no film or covering and out under a 200w cfl 24 hours later. *POP* All 9 seeds sprouted. Nice, n simple!

I agree with tussle and ak, never had a problem just sowing directly into dirt/ growing medium. I usually do a well drained solo cup filled with soil and covered with a baggie. Mist/ vent daily or poke holes and just mist depending on how dry your climate is...

Well for the past couple of years I have planted seeds outside in the dirt when it was good and hot and had lots of success in germinating the seeds. I have bought several type of starter soils (don't like any of em) to start seeds in. Seeds will just sit their and not do a dang thing. Have it on a heating pad in a room that was 80 degrees but lowered now to 78. Nothing happend seeds end up rotting I guess. I have bought kits where you just drop the seeds in the top of the germination pods and put the lid on and then turn the led lights on like the directions say. Had two sprout that way with the rest dormant or rotted/ dried out. Tried peat pellots that expand with water. None of that worked out of 15. All of these are in enclosed containers and the dirt is just moist feeling and I would have to spray with water ever few days to keep moist. None cracked. I took the seeds out and placed them in a cup of water and they sank so I put them all in napkins in the manner I described above and they haven't done anything as well. The dirt that I have been getting reminds me more of chewed up bark and sticks than good dirt. Years ago when I would buy dirt for tomato plants it was black earth that looked like something. All they have now is roadside trash chewed up and thrown in a bag. I think next I'm going to dig some dirt out of the field and sprout some that way and just have to weed out the weeds. At least I won't have gnats.

Are you guys growing in soil do so under lights or in the dark? What temps?
Temps might be you problem....80 with a heat mat.... Loose the heat mat for now and just leave then in room temp.... Like 72 ish, if you're growing in soil get a quality soil they do exist.... Porto mix is great I germ right in it....I've germed thousands of tomato seeds in it last week

I grow in soil I leave the them on my kitchen counter top until they pop then under a cfl

Take the seeds. Throw them into a glass of water. (seperate the seeds in each glass by strain) Let them soak in the water 24-48 hours until they start to crack open. Then throw them in some rockwool or rapid rooters. Let them root then plant them. You can also just toss the soaked seeds straight into the soil. They will grow. I think the paper towel method just adds more grief than anything. No need for it.

I have used the both paper towel method and just drop them in dirt and both work well for me. If the girls ae going in soil thats where I start them, if going in clay balls I start them in paper. In the last 2 years of seed growing I have not lost one in paper towel. I have lost a couple in soil but may have been my fault. I have found that they do seem to sprout quicker in paper, and I can see if they are viable as opposed to soil where I am always wondering if they actually have sprouted lol. Keeping it damp and warm helps for me, and I do use a heat mat sometimes but mostly use that for clones. Just started 10 critical kush today in towels as a matter of fact! Wooo Hooo!

Agreed, the paper towel method is good for little children who are growing a seedling from seed for earth day (see: tree) .. otherwise, put the mofo in the damn dirt and let nature do its thing.. serious. :D

I have done this many times but not having any luck with it. I have done this exact same thing during the spring and placed them in real dirt and they sprouted but I'm having a terrible time under artificial light in sprouting my beans. Some of these I have I only could get two beans and I've used up 1 of them and am afraid to try my last beans..

On a side note while I am typing every once in a while I have a (auto-saved) block in yellow pop up? What the hell is that? Making me nervous.

Don't be paranoid, it's not bad.. if you should somehow lose what you were typing, puter rebooted, whatever.. you can go back to the page you were on and click 'reply to thread' .. the lower left hand corner of the dialog box would say 'Restore Auto Save'.. click on it and your text/what you typed reappears. Hope this helps. :)

Lol. Also OP what seeds are you using? They should do something. Just don't overwater them or let them dry out. Pick seeds that are plump and striped if you're using bagseed. If they don't come up just wait. After a month then maybe you can give up but they can take a couple of weeks
