There are valid reasons to play with stunts like this though, so getting down on someone for doing anything you don't understand or that you just don't see a reason for is pretty stupid.
I used a 16oz grow contest of my own to select the best handfull of seeds from a line up of maybe 50 starters when I wanted plants that would grow floor to ceiling in 6 gallon buckets. I knew I was asking more than normal so I preselcted plants that seemed to give a shit less about being rootbound and not only did it work it payed off quite well.
Just the learning experience alone is worth it. You can't help but learn more than you knew to begin with when doing really off the wall stuff like this. I'm sure this op will improve his ability to guess what plants need and when and improve his ability to perceive even the slightest changes in plants by doing this, among other things.
Don't be a bunch of little negative nancy dicks... People like this guy will get better and better at growing and people like you will end up looking to people like him for help.
