Starting my grow

I received my seeds today and want to start them under 150W hps for 2 weeks.. then put them under 1000W MH... the seeds are autos and using FFOF with FF nutrients. Is there a lot of objections to starting these under 150 hps? I am new to this so plz help if you can

Keep the light rather high. Seedling don't need much at all.

No problem starting with the HPS. Above poster is correct.
Make it easy on yourself. Download a Lux app on your phone. Hang your 150w to where your seedling is getting 11k Lux and you should be good.
2 weeks and hit up the 1000w. Mine go under a 1k right about that time.

Best of luck and happy growing!

***Edit. If you find you like using the Lux app, drop $30 and get a real meter when you can. Those apps are not very accurate but are good enough to get started.

Gray thank you for the response. Would 24” be too high? Will this method of money savings strategy hurt my total yield. I will be using the low stress training when switching to the 1000W MH

A 150w HPS isnt much, but it's a lot more than a seedling needs. You could get away with using a CFL, bit If your going to use the 150w, just keep it at a good distance away. 24-30in should be fine, as they really arent nearly as intense as higher wattage HPS fixtures.

And be careful with ffof.. it's great stuff, but can be a bit hot on seedlings, and with autos, you wanna do everything you can to prevent stress. I'd suggest mixing it 50/50 with ff happy frog if possible. Itll lighten the soil, and help prevent burning on young seedlings

I will take your advice on the lux app. This forum is awesome. I am starting 2 plants in my new room 5’x6’x 7’ ceiling. I hope not burn my plants with 1000w bulb. Will have 6” exhaust for heat.

Haven't ran a 150w so cant help on height. That's why the Lux meter is so important.
You won't suffer on yield. Running the 1000w right now would just be a waste of energy.

You'll be fine. This is a 1000w hps @ 10" above the plant. (In Flower)

Air cooled hood is a must have!

Definitely ease them into that thousand . Those things are dangerous, especially coming from a 150 of a dif spectrum

Not just heat , the power of those are intense. If it feels warm on the back of ur hand move it up . I am just speaking from experience I lost seedlings

I have the umbrella style hood for my 1000w hps.. I will adjust my in and out vent to accommodate.
You might want to think about getting a sealed hood. A 6 inch 400+ cfm fan can pull a good majority of the heat produced by a 1000 watt out of the grow area when you're using a sealed hood. You can get a sealed hood for around $50. Also you mention both MH and HPS so I'm assuming that you're using a digital ballast that accommodates both types of bulbs. That's important because some of the older ballasts will only run one kind of light.

@xtsho is absolutely correct. In my 4'x4'x7' tent I have a 435cfm 6" exhaust, air cooled sealed hood running a 1000w mh right now. My room temp that the tent is in is 70F. At 100% exhaust my tent is 80F. In that parabolic reflector your room is gonna be 95F+ in minutes with the 1000w.

I do have a 6” exhaust at 435 CFM’s. This room is in that basement with an ambient temp of 68~. A little cooler in the summer. I am drawing air in from the lower 1/3 and exhausting from the ceiling at opposite walls. The cubic feet in the room is 210 the exhaust fan should turn over the air 2x pr min. Am I missing something on the temp getting to 95*? Yes I have a ballast for both hps & my.
