Starting my research

I will be doing my first grow here in the near future. I have always been the type to do extensive research about stuff before I do it. There is only so much you can read and then you need to start talking to people who do it themselves and get advice.

I already have a room which is a 8x12. So room isn't to much of an issue. How many plants should I start out with as a beginner?

My goal is to get started and obtain the knowledge as I have always been interested in growing.

I know you need the full color spectrum for growing. What lighting system would be good to use that isn't to expensive or put off to much heat? If there is not a way to prevent heat from lighting, what would be a good way to prevent the heat signatures from getting out or vent them properly?
I was reading about t5 lights or cfls and I am not sure if I want to use those unless some of you guys have had complete success very similar to HIDs

I was also reading about what type of strain I should go for first. I was thinking of ak-47, ak-48, blueberry. I want to your guys thought on what I should start out with.

Any other advice would be appreciated as well.

dont do autos!! i wouldnt get fem seeds either although there are SOME good ones out there...if you can get some nice clones from a respected dispensary then go that route, if not get reg seeds from a place like TGA, sin city seeds, bodhi, Karma and you can learn to distinguish a male from a female your first grow...i would start off with a 400w hps or you can get really nice buds from a t5 and a terrific gram per watt ratio if you SCROG your plant/s...i wouldn't start with the real blueberry from dj short, ive heard its pretty picky and low yielding...if you do get fem seeds get pineapple express from g13 ive heard only great things about that strain...if i were you i would start with a couple t5s make sure you get the HO bulbs do a mixed spectrum, after 1 or two t5 grows you could use your t5s for vegging and get some HIDs for flowering if you plan to use all of that space

You can harvest pounds in that room lol. The only options for low heat is led or t5 ho but both get expensive if you want a big grow, cheapest lights are hps but they give off alot of heat. There really aren't any cheap and cool running lights. You're gona get a million different answers with the question, for a more accurate answer you'd have to give more details of your goals. For example how much do you want to harvest at a time? What's your budget? Etc etc

At first I don't want to grow and harvest pounds by any means. I want to learn the ropes first and do everything right so I get good yields and also learn about ways to prevent heat from being noticed. I am not sure how much I want to invest yet. I am probably going to start off pricing everything and figure how much I want to spend based off of potential yield and the route I want to go. I don't want to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars getting high quality equipment. With the T5, I have been reading mixed reviews, what do you personally think about them?

What does it mean to SCROG the plants? I was originally thinking of going the 400w hps route. But as long as people convince me otherwise I think I want to go for t5 for vegging and an HID for flowering. I was also thinking about going feminized but I am still not sure about that. From what I read feminized sounded the way to go.
