Starting Seeds in Sphagnum?

What should I use to start my seeds in?
I have Sphagnum peat, rice hulls, and worm castings.
Do these make a good starter mix?
Do I have to let this cook?
Will there be PH issues or anything else I should know?

Those three ingredients mixed together would make a great seed starter. The peat has an acidic pH so use some mix in a little lime and you should be good to go. You can just mix it up and use it right away. I use to make my own seed starting mix using peat, worm castings, perlite, vermiculite, and lime. Rice hulls can be used as a replacement for peat and the vermiculite isn't necessary. I haven't been to the organic farm supply recently and I ran out of worm castings so lately I've just been screening decent potting soil to get the big chunks out. But with gardening season just around the corner I'm going to have to get a couple 30 lb bags.

I use the "large" sized Jiffy peat pellets to start my seeds, once they get started the whole thing goes into a small pot.
