Hey guys, I am new to the forum and a first time grower! I would like to share my progress and seek advice from the more experienced growers as this is all completely new to me.
To start, I spent many weeks researching and educating myself on the topic. I gathered as much info. as I could the last few months until I finally pulled the trigger. I decided to put together a hydro setup with an LED light.
I never planned to log the grow, unfortunately I do not have any photos from the beginning through today, day 56. I will fill everyone in on the progress I have made so far to the best that I can.
All photos are below*
Here is my setup:
- AK48 from Nirvana
- Micro Grow custom Cabinet (12"x17"x4')
- 150w LED (50x 3w LEDs)
- General Hydroponics flora series
- 4gallon tub
- 5" netpot
- 6" Air stone (Creates tons of bubbles)
- Small 4" fan for circulation
- 130mm PC fan for exhaust (will be adding carbon soon)
Grow Log:
I started the grow the beginning of June. I germinated the seed in rockwool that was Ph'd to 5.8 for about 3 days. I then transferred the tiny seedling into the hydro setup. The LED has been kept about 10-12" away since. I let the setup go for about 2 weeks without any nutrients. Just distilled water adjusted to a Ph of about 5.8
Day 12 (Week 2)
The plant is about 3-4" tall with a few leaves. I noticed some minor signs of N deficiency so I started to add nutrients as per General Hydro's chart at 1/3 strength. I added each nutrient separately into the tub. After the nutrients, I adjusted the Ph back to 5.8
At this point, I tried topping the plant. As I said, I am a complete novice. I was not 100% sure where to top although I gave it a go anyways
Day 38 (Week 5)
Plant growth has just about doubled. I would guess it was about 7-8". I decided to flush the water and go for full strength nutrients. The plant was very healthy at the time and I knew this was a critical point in the veg period.
After about 3 days I began to notice signs of very bad nutrient burn. After a bit of research on General Hydroponics feeding chart I realized I was using way too much nutrients (about double what was recommend!) and harming the plant. I flushed the entire system and went back to plain ph'd water.
Day 45 (Week 6)
The plant is about 8-9" tall. Not much new growth. The plant has many brown, dried up fan leaves and a few with some minor nutrient burn. I removed most of them. I also added back nutrients following a new feeding chart.
Day 52 (Week 7)
Plant has new healthy growth. Just over 11". Seems very happy. I pulled off a few more leaves that were dried up. At this point I am extending the veg period longer than I had planned. I want to make sure I get the plant very healthy before I switch over to flower. I plan for another week or two of veg.
I also noticed that the plant was never topped correctly. This is when I realized the plant will make one big cola during flower. I already have a lot of vertical growth and do not want to top this late during veg. I would like to start flowering asap. I looked over all training techniques and decided that the best thing I can do at this point is super crop the main stem and start a scrog.
Today, Day 56 (Week 7)
The plant is a bit over 1' tall with many branches and new leaves. All the growth looks very healthy.
I super-croped the main stem about 4-5" from the top. I'm hoping this will lower the canopy and help divert growth outwards toward the lower branches. I will install a Scrog net in the next day or so.
I hope to start flower in about a week when the plant recovers. She now sits around 9" from the ground. This is the ideal height for my grow area.
Here are some photos from today just after training.
If you have any thoughts or advice, please let me know! I am totally new to this and hope to learn as much as I can. I will be updating this log regularly, stay tuned and thank you for your time!!
