Hey All - Long time lurker here. I have a few successful grows under my belt and although I haven't directly participated in the community before today - this site has always been a great resource for me.
Well I got the itch to start up another grow and figured I would start a journal to document the progress and get a little more involved here.
This grow will be a stealth(ish) grow. The cabinet/box is a convert piece of furniture that I built from scratch with the purpose of growing ultimately in mind. The internal dimensions are approximately 42"L x 22"W x 36"H with a raised floor for light proof passive air intakes.
I am growing out 2 feminized Purple Pine-berries in a DWC under a P450 LED lamp.
Nutrient Line used is Advanced Nutrients Grow/Micro/Bloom + B-52.Voodoo,Overdrive and Big bud. In addition I have Cal-Mag when needed, and Hygrozyme
Reservoir is a converted storage tote that is about 12 gallons but due to net pot depth is filled with 5 gallons of nutrient solution. Due to the low temp LED and good airflow (and the fact the the reservoir is wrapped in aluminized bubble-wrap and panda-poly) the reservoir temps sit at a nice 65-68 F
Box is exhausted by a converted Panasonic Whisperline bathroom ceiling fan rated at 110CFM, fitted with a custom carbon scrubber that contains 6lbs of carbon. I cant say enough good things about this fan, cheap for the decibel level, easy to modify, highly recommended if it fits in your design. The reservoir and the fan stand are isolated by sorbothane vibration pads so no noise transfers to the cabinet.
The reservoir is pH and EC are constantly monitored by a couple Milwaukee's decent equipment for the price! (<$100)
Currently, in place of the SCROG screen I have a 30% Shade cloth/fabric stretched over the mounting points for the screen. The recommended distance for the P450 is North of 24 inches and closer to 30-34 for seedlings. Given the limitations of the cabinet, the furthest I can go from the top of the screen (not the plant top at their current height) is ~24 inches. To prevent damage to the seedlings I figured this was the best method. I tried doubling up the 30% but the seedlings were stretching for light, and they seem pretty happy with the current amount of light.
You'll notice the girl on the left is a little droopy. I was a bit confused as to why she would be droopy (looks like over-watering) and the plant next door, in the same reservoir, would be absolutely fine. I discovered the water level was a little high and above the base of the net pot. If the plant on the left was deep in the netpot and the rapid rooter had wet feet, i figured this could contribute to the droop. The reservoir is aerated by an Ehiem 400, which runs dual 5 inch round aeration stones which are fixed under the netpots, so I am not too concerned with under-aeration. For what it is worth, that pump is rated for a 120 gallon aquarium, not that there is any real correlation between DWC and fish tank aeration haha.
I did notice the roots had grown through the net pot and looked nice and healthy so I lowered the solution level to ~3/4" below the net pots. We will see how that goes, because right not its definitely a tale of two plants (visually). Both are a nice healthy green.
So that's the set up. The girls broke surface 23NOV16, so they are about 1 week old.
Current parameters for Week 1 are:
pH: 5.4-5.9 (drift slowly over the week)
EC: 0.8 or ~400ppm (with 0.5 conversion)
Solution Temperature: 67.2 F
Nutrients: 1/4 dosing of Grow, Micro, Bloom, B-52, and Voodoo + Hygozyme
Cabinet Air Temp: 74.3 F
Humidity: 49 %RH (tad lower than I want)
Plants are under 24/0. Fingers crossed for a good grow, buckle up and join me!
