There are some pretty crazy ancient tales from michigan too. all tribes have tales of contact with the white man LONG before europe came here. there are several viking like structures in the UP and upper lower peninsula as well. Im a bit of a movie maker (amateur with a pile of pro gear) and I've been running in circles on what subject to shoot a documentary on here in MI. we got a lot of crazy shit. no matter what you are into be it aliens, bigfoot, other weird creatures, ancient structures, bottomless lakes, strange holes and VERY BIZZARE land formations.

Im very interested in the history pre 1500. i haven't been able to find a whole lot on the tribal history of the area. i know pretty much every tribe from even slightly near by had a presence here. but i haven't really managed to find history before europeans starting fuckin the place up. any suggestions pot snob?

Well the glaciers made all kinds of weird holes and hills and monoliths that are pretty crazy. Up near MIO where we bird hunt theres a spot called DEVILS HOLE. you can get back there by quad if your gangster but we always just hoofed it. its like 3 hours back from where you can park and its WEIRD as shit. As perfect of a circle as you can get. looks like someone took an ice-cream scoop to the earth there with a nice little rim around the edge. looks like a meteor impact but its too small i think for that. Trees and grass THRIVE at the bottom in the center too even when i was a little kid i thought it was a very strange place. felt wrong. My ole man thinks its a glacier erosion of some sorts and he's probably right there are all kinds of hills and shit up there that the glaciers dropped.

But I'm sure thats not the weird you were wanting!

Well as you stated Michigan has a very diverse history well before the French Voyageurs arrived to trade and intermarry . The vikings were here well before and our elders tell us so according to what has been passed down . There is proof of the Copper mined in the UP being in the Pyramids in Egypt of all places . As you mentioned ancient tablets and tools have been found here and much more .

Pre 1500 history is rare and it can be found in the books of the Historians who recorded what they could at the time of being here amongst the Nations , Father Baraga was one who wrote and studied in Anishinaabmowin language . Chief Andrew Black Bird also wrote about being born in a wigwam and off the stories he was taught of the region of the Crooked Tree ..

I could talk for hours about this all and am fairly knowledgeable of Michigan's tribal history and as you stated many tribes had a time spent here or at least sent attacking war parties .. For instance there was a tribe known as the Mascouten and the resided where cross village is now but long story short they offended a war party of Ottawa warriors who were lamenting there loss of warriors while paddling back from Wisconsin and low and behold they were peleted with Ash balls and leaf and long story short the war chief sent a return party back and annihilated them , perhaps a few made it out alive and lived amongst other nations but as the Huron the Mascouten people no longer exist .. It was not long after this that a core of our Nation left Manitoulin Island and made a home where the Mascouten had thrived for centuries untold , we still have remnants of the old fields that contained the tribal gardens up here from that time in era . This is how we Ottawa ( Odawa ) became Michigan residents lol . It was not long after this that new bands such as mine became as people migrated south along the rivers for winter refuge .

Best place to learn about the Indian culture is amongst Indians but this is not always feasible due to reverse racism and more ..So with that said Historians and there records are another great way to learn but then you are often reading the opposite of what really happened . Going tonight to meet a Historian at Michilimackinaw and his book was just released .. Beyond Pontiacs Shadow . I highly recommend this reading as it has been held back from the public since the mid 60s ..
