Stinky, stinky! Nutrients which reduce smell?

As far as I can tell the biggest obstacle in security that I'm going to face is the complication of aroma.

THE QUESTION: Is there a particular set of nutrients which will mitigate smell to any degree, but still maintain optimum results?

This is my first grow.
I'll be using a 3-gallon DWC setup. One or two plants to start, although I could certainly fit more.

The rest of my setup is as follows; Cabinet constructed using 1/4-inch medium density fiberboard (MDF)[ 2ft x 2.5ft x 5ft], which I have thoroughly caulked and re-caulked. 250 Watt ballast, with MH for veg, HPS for flower.

The only non-airtight aspects of the box are two 120mm computer fans for cooling/air-circulation, and a squirrel-fan + carbon filter to control scent. The cabinet itself will be in the corner of an unfinished basement in a medium size suburban house. It's fairly out of the way, in a place which experiences basically no foot traffic. Keep in mind, in addition to security (most important) my goal here is to not bother the rest of my family, who are aware of my project, but PROBABLY don't want it to stink to high heaven.

I intend to grow a few crops of tomatoes and peppers before moving on to the more advanced horticulture.;-)

All that being said, the strain I intend to grow will be Black Domina, when I've decided I'm familiar enough with the setup.

I've heard conflicting opinions as to whether or not Black Domina is a heavily-scented strain. (Secondary Question: Is Black Domina particularly fragrant? And exactly how stinky are we talking, here?)

[[[EDIT Final Question : What Nutes brands are people using with their own Black Domina? What's giving good results?]]]

So, to recap--------------------------------the questions

1) Are there any good nutes out there which mitigate smell, but don't impact production?

2) Is Black Domina a very smell strain? How smelly?

3) Disregarding the first question of scent reduction, what nutrients are providing the best results for Black Domina grows out there?

I do not believe you can control smell with nutrients. The plant's needs are for ionic mineral nutes that are inherently almost odorless. cn

flavonoids, and terpenoids control odor/taste. Normally if my bud doesn't smell great its because it wasn't grown well, the genes suck, etc. obviously there are strains that smell a little less than others, but really I would focus more on getting a good filter and growing the best shit I can.

That's a cogent point, sir!

I have a slightly over-sized filter/fan setup for my cabinet. The gentlemen at the grow store all agree it shouldn't be much of a problem. As the setup comes together, I'm more and more at ease with it's efficacy as I perceive it through observation and extrapolation;

What I mean is, the cabinet is a decent piece of work. I feel that it's relatively airtight, and all the components are where they need to be, in the optimum locales.

I suppose I'm mostly concerned about the rest of the family... I want to respect their wishes that this grow not impact their daily lives in any way.

Still

No information on what I should be expecting from my Black Domina in terms of scent?

With a good filter/fan, a skunk could die of cholera in there and nobody would know. cn
^ That made me giggle a little... I like the cut of your jib, my man.

The fan and filter ran me just short of $200... it had best work or I'm gonna send my hydro store owners through a wood chipper, and use the giblets in my nutrient solution... :P

whats the brand of the filter you got. Good ones aren't cheap. I'm about to drop $500 on a new fan/filter setup. The filter is roughly $250-300, and the fan will be around $200ish. It is worth it though. I cheaped out before and it stunk. The good ones make it smell like nothing is going on. Drying is what stinks the worst. Also touching the plants make them stink.

the brand is "Phresh"

^This looks reasonably similar. In fact it may be the exact one. 4" intake. I think it's about 11" long total, 4x8 sounds about right, including the metal bits at either end.

I'm running a Phresh and am completely happy with it. My gals are smelling s*t*r*o*n*g and neither my ex nor other family members have twigged. cn

Word.

I'm feeling much better about this scent issue, gentlemen. I appreciate the input.

Err... how do you up rep? lol. (New to all forums, generally, and this one specifically!)

LEts not foget how you move your air,, where is the exchaust going? My exchuast goes in my attic, so I no longer use a filter..

lol.... and your attic just absorbs the smell? I don't get it. Try that with a decent sized grow. I've piped exhaust into my attic WITH carbon filters, and you could smell it outside the house. Maybe a CFL grow or something.

Rethink what your goals are. Is it that you don't want anyone to know about your grow and want to keep the smell down for security reasons. If that's the case run a fan and carbon filter and your problem is solved.

I grew out a Black Domina last season. It wasn't anything special. Didn't really stink anymore than normal. It's the OG Kush, Diesel strains that really stink! Of course those are the best smoke too.

There is a surefire cure for odor. First, do what stink says and exhaust with a strong fan and carbon filter. Second make an ona bucket and run it OUTSIDE the room. Running it inside the room doesn't work. If you run it just outside the room, it gets all the odors that escape into the walls and ceiling cracks. Gets any residual odor that escapes into your house or outside.

To make an ona bucket, get liquid Ona and a three gallon bucket. Drill some 1 inch holes around the rim of the bucket, about an inch from the top all the way around. Put 1 - 2 inches of water in the bucket and 3 or 4 tablespoons of Ona liquid inside. Get a round, flat fan and put it face down on top of the bucket, so it blows into it. The ona odor will escape out the holes. Every 2 days, add about a tablespoon of Ona to the solution, and top off the water. You should agitate it once every day, just rock it back and forth to swirl the ona water around a bit.

If you use pure Ona, you will go through a gallon of it in no time because you are evaporating pure ona. Mixing it with water, you are evaporating mostly water and a little Ona, and your Ona lasts ten times longer AND it still smells strong. I can make a gallon last 6 - 8 months.

When I first started using can filters, I would put ona in the room, but could still smell it slightly up in my driveway and in my living room during flowering. When I started putting it just outside the room, it killed all the escaping odor.

This is the surefire cure for stubborn odor problems.

Hope that helps.

I like this but why would he need a secondary odor control set up if he creates enough negative pressure with his carbon filter pulling out the smell? My understanding, and short time experience is that the carbon filter will remove the smell entirely, especially if you have enough negative pressure in the room/tent to ensure all that stinky air is getting sucked through that carbon filter.

Just my .2!

Because sometimes, especially with older houses, some of the odor escapes into the floorboards and walls. My house is over 100 years old and the last couple weeks of budding I could smell it a bit in my living room and sometimes get a whiff of it up in my driveway. My friend could smell a little of it in his house too, and out by his garbage cans. Once you use a carbon filter, you will understand what I am talking about. Carbon filters are not 100% effective, especially with older houses.
