hey guys,
i was just doing a little pre paint puff when i started thinkin what if. i just switched to soil from dwc and was kinda wondering if i filled the bottom 1/3 of a 5 gal bucket with hydroton and threw an airstone in there and covered with dirt if any air would actually make it to the roots. any thoughts on this?

Use a rod, screwdriver, weed puller to ram holes through your root zone. Get oxygen by a proven method, amputates roots (with the weed puller) which causes tip regeneration and, unlike above-the-ground vegetation, results in 2 to 4 new root tips for each severed root. The new smart fabric pots do just that - amputate.

BTW I like the fill ratio. Keep dirt on hand as your soil settles and fills the voids in the hydroton but great use of your medium for drainage, nutrient and water reservoir. With that said I suggest weighing to determine water needs. My experience with like was coarse lava.

You will be surprised how long than they go between waterings and that experience with lava was my teacher to ALWAYS use reduce ratio feedings until you see a need by the plant for an increase. Feed, water, water.
