Strain SMELLS good...but taste doesn't transfer. Why?

I bought some DJ Short's Blueberry one time when was passing through Denver. It smelled great and when I got it in the rental car, it ws in the container, but it still made the car smell like really good blueberry weed. I was anxious to have it be like that old school blueberry taste, but it tasted like gunpowder or something! I couldn't figure out. And I've noticed this same thing with a lot of commercial strains. I have to literally put my nose into the container to smell anything with most of them....and when I finally detect a smell of something, the taste almost never translates into the smoke. But I know from personal experience that there used to be strains that tasted like they smelled. So, the DJ Short's Blueberry had the right smell, which suggests that the terpene profile was blueberry...but no taste. If it's not the terpenes, then what else is there? Volatile esters? (I heard Kevin Jodery mention that term....)

Was it like burnt matches almost in smell and taste? If so its overdosed with pk boost be my guess

I have never seen or heard from a reliable source about anyone spraying weed with terps. Lots of companies add terps to distillate cartridges, and that sucks. I would much rather have plain disty in the cart then added fake flavors and smells. I havn't messed with carts much in years though.

Back in 2019 when the hempocolypes happened, I did hear about a super shady guy that a friend new that was spraying hemp with distillate and terps to make it sellable. I didn't see any of it but I don't believe for a second that I wouldn't be able to tell it was sprayed with something.

@tstick I do think that the esters and flavinoids have alot to do with the taste, and the terpenes more to do with the smells. I still am a firm believer in the entourage effect, even if it could be a placebo. When I smoke something that has good smell, and taste I usually feel like I get a more well-rounded high as well. I haven't found that different terpenes cause different effects for me like some people claim though. There have only been a few strains of weed I've smoked that gave specific distinctive effects, but it's the effect I remember for most of them not the smell or flavor.

Have you seen this done? Have you known someone who actually works for a company that sprays flavors on?

You say it isn't anything new, but I've never seen or heard anything about it in real life. Every so often I see comments on threads like this, but that is just hearsay as far as I'm concerned. I would love to know where this is actually happening so I never visit those places.

Here in the Oregon dispensaries, there is usually a little top-top self, some normal decent weed and a bunch of cheap commercial weed.
The top shelf is usually pretty fire. It'll usually have the smell, the flavor, and a good high.
The decent weed smells good and looks good, gets you high. Lots of this decent weed doesn't taste like much though when you smoke it.
The cheap weed is all boring no smell no flavor commercial buds. If you havn't smoked all day it will give you a buzz but it won't taste like anything other then burning plant.

Oh the entourage thing is definitely real i don't think it's the placebo effect for sure that's where the magic is so to speak everything working together in synergy is what makes it

There is zero testing or control on med weed here its a fricking joke When someone says the smell an taste dont match ding ding! What i grow kicks ass on any thing in a med store an mine smells an taste the same after 45yrs growing yup I seen some shady stuff. Fake terps are all about smell period.

So you are just gonna ignore my questions and continue to assume things?

Have you ever ACTUALLY seen anyone spray weed before selling it at a dispensary? Or have you ever known someone who actually did this?

Its impressive you've been growing for 45 years. I'm sure your weed is far better than the commercial crap at the dispos. I have only gotten weed here in OR twice that was as good as the stuff I grew before I moved here. One of those times was black market and the other was from the Organic farm I work on.

good smell doesn't equal good taste.

A broad variety of flavorants in cannabis including esters, alcohols, ketones, and more that contribute to the berry, tropical, candy, fruity, strawberry, pineapple, and other sweet notes were identified,” it continue

Agreed. I wanted the cartridge to be black berry kush. Not kush with blackberry additives.

Ime it’s rare for a strain’s smell to transfer to the taste and even more rare for it to taste good all the way to the end of the joint. It may have just been a lackluster blueberry selection.
Also I had some bho one time that smelled like lemon but tasted like straight burnt sulfur. I wonder if they sprayed sulfur in flower and that’s what caused the taste. I threw that shit away

I just grew out a blueberry pancake cross after drying for two weeks, the buds smell great but i have the aame thing, almost no flavor on the inhale. No pk boost used, it was grown in living soil. The other strains all translate the smell to flavor well
