this is what I have learned here
mylar is #1 the best
aluminum foil is #2 and
flat white painted walls are #3
mylar is cheaper than aluminum foil and easy to get. you can get it at walmart in the camping section and its an emergency blanket type deal and its super shiny, way better than aluminum foil.
but yes you can use foil and it still works effectivly.

Dont use foil it causes hotspots from any creases in it. I would use nothing if not the right thing ,its not worth harming the plant but the emergency blanket is a good option and its cheap and easy to come by. Just visit any department store with a outdoors section they go for a couple bucks.

IMO i would say that flat white paint would be the best reflective material, mylar, mirrors, and tin foil all create hot spots and absorb light that could be used by the plants

mylar is a giant pain in the ass! Foil isn't much easier and makes for hot spots. Flat white paint, super easy to apply, wipe clean and lasts without tearing.

Here they are called Thermal Emergency Blankets. The price sounds about right.

Food-grade aluminum foil is not very reflective ... too much silicon which gives it a grayness.
Flat white paint can be very good. Mylar is superior. chasta's suggestion of space blankets is much much better than typical aluminum foil imo.

i have heard mixed things about foil. i say flat white pain is just as good for the price and the pain in the ass it is to put it on(mylar) it probally dosent make that much of a difference. as long as you have some form of reflection you should be fine. definatly no pro here but i think there is like a 10% difference (like white paint reflects 80% of the light and mylar reflects 90%)

I took the space blanket Mylar spray some spray glue on a half sheet of 3/8 plywood . covered the whole thing with glue at one time . lay the space blanket on there . took a rag and rubbed bubbles towards edges . then cut it flush with knife . Last took some duct tape on edges to make double sure it was secure . It was anything but a pain in the ass . Just don't spray the glue in your grow room while you have plants in there . Got the plywood for free . I think if i ever do a small 4x4 grow box i'll build the whole thing this way .

Try doing an already built 7x7x7 room in it, it will go up pretty well, but with proper air flow and a fair amount of time it will start working its way loose. In small areas not so bad, air flow doesn't have to be so much, in larger areas it gets worse. Painting took half as long and is still in place. just my .02

Reflectivity wise it goes polished aluminum, mylar, aluminum foil, white paint but they are all pretty close to each other - I'd go with white paint for the convenience. The bit about foil causing hot spots which can burn plants is a myth - a dimpled polished aluminum reflector won't burn a plant nor a dimple in mylar, which are both more reflective...
If you use mylar make sure it is tightly backed my a opaque material. Mylar with no backing does not reflect light very well.
